Bridgman tops Carrera Cup testing

Tim Bridgman was the fastest of the 2008 Porsche Carrera Cup GB title contenders during the major pre-season test and media day at Silverstone yesterday (Tuesday 25 March). The former single-seater ace dipped below the 57s barrier for Team Parker Racing to confirm his status as a major contender ahead of the 20-race season, which starts at Brands Hatch this weekend (29/30 March). However, the fastest driver of the day was Richard Westbrook at the wheel of the Porsche Motorsport VIP car, with a best lap of 56.774s.Westbrook, the double Porsche Supercup champion and now a Porsche factory driver, was on hand to shake down the new car as well as give some high-speed passenger laps to members of the media. "I've had a really good day," reported Westbrook, who also drove the earlier model 911GT3 Cup VIP car, which will run in the new pro-am2 category this season. "It was really good to see the difference between the 2008 model and the earlier car. They are lovely cars to drive and I always enjoy driving them." Having set the overall pace in the 2008 car, Westbrook also put in some very impressive laps in the older car. However, it was Bridgman who headed the championship regulars with an excellent day's work. "This is only my second day in the car and we've just been working through set-up changes. We're fast, which is the important thing," said Bridgman.Tim Harvey (Red Line Racing) and Michael Caine (Team Parker Racing) were next fastest, both running good days to get their title bids off to a strong start. "We're happy with our day's work," said Harvey, while Caine was pleased to post good times after concluding a late deal to return to the championship with Team Parker Racing.Making it three Team Parker Racing cars in the top four championship regulars was Charles Bateman, less than a tenth of a second behind Caine. "We're getting up there," said Bateman, who has stepped up to the pro category for his second season in the Carrera Cup.Phil Quaife and Sam Hancock continued their pre-season testing with Jota Sport, although some technical issues prevented Hancock from running as many laps as his rivals, while Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing) and Tony Gilham (ReDesign Racing) headed the pro-am1 runners.
