Jordans double top 10
Mike and Andrew Jordan made a great start to the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch over the weekend (29/30 March) with both cars in the top 10 for the final race of the day and Mike narrowly missing an overall podium place.Mike (50) and Andrew (18) were making BTCC history in the pair of Honda Integras from John Guest Racing by being the first father and son team to compete in the championship."My dream result for this weekend was both cars in the top 10 and one on the podium," said Mike at the end the day. In fact, in the final race Mike ran third for much of the race before being squeezed back to fourth by Matt Neal as Andrew completed a fine debut weekend in the BTCC with a storming drive to ninth place. After a difficult time in qualifying during ever-changing conditions, Mike and Andrew started the opening race from midfield. On the first lap Andrew needed lightning fast reactions to keep his car out of the gravel trap. "I'm not sure who it was, but someone hit Matt Allison and that knocked him into me. I just buried the throttle as hard as I could and the rear wheels just dropped into the gravel but I managed to pull it round."That dropped Andrew to the tail of the pack, but he then turned in some very fast laps to work back into contention and as light rain fell he dived ahead of Mike. However, when challenging Rob Collard's BMW for 12th place, Andrew ran wide through the gravel at Paddock Hill Bend and dropped to 15th as Mike took 13th place.Mike had a strong run in race two to take ninth place after a big battle with the SEAT of Adam Jones, while Andrew started from the pit lane after a late problem was found with the air box on his car. He worked through to 14th, but it was Mike's ninth place that earned him pole position for the third race of the day in the grid draw.Although he was just unable to match the pace of the two leading BMWs, Mike held third for many laps despite a fierce challenge from Matt Neal in the works Vauxhall Vectra. It was only in the closing laps that Neal was able to forge ahead at McLaren. "Matt knew where I was struggling with a bit of understeer," said Mike. "I was disappointed not to hold on to third, but it was still a very good result."To complete a fine finish to the day for the team, Andrew drove a superb race to ninth place. "The third race was mega," said Andrew. "I had a good battle with Stephen Jelley in the BMW. It looked like his rear tyres were going away and he just dropped a wheel in the gravel at Paddock and I got him on the run up to Druids to get ninth."
