Breeze bids for success at Donington

Carl Breeze heads to Donington this weekend looking for more wins in the increasingly competitive Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup. However, against tough opposition, it could be his hardest weekend yet.

Two wins at Brands Hatch and two at Thruxton have helped to catapult Carl Breeze into the lead of the Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup, but he is likely to find life tougher this weekend. Fellow former single-seater-turned saloon racer Dan Welch joined the fray at Thruxton and stunned everyone by nabbing three pole positions in his first meeting in the series. Granted, Thruxton is his home circuit, but his pace was excellent all weekend.

But for some poor starts, Welch would have been a major factor and his ability to recover ground after an early spin was impressive indeed. Both Breeze and Welch are new to the championship this year, but neither shows a lack of car knowledge and Breeze has been unlucky not to make it a clean sweep. Contact at Brands Hatch cost him a win (Frank Wrathall inheriting it), whilst he was the victim of an ambitious move by Rob Austin at Thruxton which cost him any chance of a race win.

Dan missed Brands Hatch but was as quick as anyone on race pace at Thruxton, whilst Frank Wrathall won at Brands Hatch and should be up front, too. He also suffered from damage at Thruxton but will be competitive as will Speedworks team owner Christian Dick and former Ginetta Junior hot-shoe Tom Sharp. One-make saloon racer Fulvio Mussi will be on the pace and multiple National Hot Rod champion Colin White is heading the Chairman’s Cup for the over 40-year-old drivers.

Former BTCC racer Mark Proctor is due to return to the series this weekend, squaring up against former Caterham racer Julien Draper who suffered a huge amount of damage at Thruxton – and then went quicker!

Chris Dittman has taken a G50 pole position in the past but has yet to display his best this year whilst the ever-improving Richard Sykes should take the Chairman’s Cup fight to White this weekend. Set to make his G50 debut is former Castle Combe Special GT racer and GT90s race winner David Krayem.

Qualifying fires into life at 09:05 on Saturday May 16 with the 12 lap sprint race that afternoon at 14:05. Sunday’s longer 16 lap races start at 09:50 and 15:40.
