with Title Battle Already Fierce
Oulton Park Hosts rounds seven and eight this coming Saturday (June 13th) of the 2009 Porsche Club Championship with title battle already fierce. At the front of the field Ben Demetriou and Mark McAleer have taken three wins each in their 968s, but reigning champion Jez Clark is still undefeated in Class Two and heads the points table heading into today’s two races.
Class One in numerically the biggest category, with Demetriou and McAleer being chased hard by their class rivals. With a win apiece at the season opener at Donington in April, the pair have since taken turns to dominate, Demetriou holding off McAleer in two tight races on Anglesey, while McAleer was the man to beat at Brands Hatch in May.
If the front-engined 968s have been doing the winning, the rear-engined cars are always quick off the line, and at the previous meeting at Brands Hatch Kevin Harrison’s 964 set the early pace. Also becoming a threat are the 993 C2s, new to the series this season, Gary Duckman and Scott Kavanagh running in the top ten at Brands and Duckman taking the first podium for the new model. The most powerful Porsches in the series, the 993s are also the heaviest to match the power to weight ratio of the other Class One runners.
Clark has been the man to beat in Class Two, stepping up to a 944 S2 after winning the title from Class Three last season. Quick in qualifying, he has started on the front row of the grid at Anglesey and Brands, and finished in the top ten overall on more than one occasion on the way to a 100% winning record in the class. Rivals include Chris Dyer and John Gilmore, Dyer retiring at Brands with a clutch problem last time out.
Class Three has seen Anthony Oliver and Mary Taylor battling for class supremacy.
Qualifying for the Porsche Club Championship is at 8.30 on Saturday morning, with the first of the two 30-minute races the opening race of the day just before the lunch break, and the second race the sixth event of day later in the afternoon.
