MSA British Drag Racing Championship - Round 3: Santa Pod Raceway, 13/14 June

Andy Robinson has hit a vein of scintillating form. Having vanquished Europe's finest Pro Modified racers last month, the Hampshire star overcame an all-British field in similar style during Round 3 of the MSA British Drag Racing Championship at Santa Pod Raceway's Summer Nationals. 6.1-second elapsed times have hitherto been a rare achievement thinly spread amongst Europe's Pro Mod leaders. Now Robinson reels them off with metronomic efficiency. Of six passes in qualifying and eliminations this weekend, only one slipped into the 6.2s. Moreover, three produced 230mph-plus terminal speeds, Robinson's first trips into that zone.

Beaten finalist Graham Ellis from Essex is quickly realising his Plymouth Superbird's potential. Having cracked the 230mph barrier last month, Ellis savaged his previous 6.5sec best elapsed time with a pair of 6.2s to propel himself to the verge of Pro Mod's front rank. Together, Robinson and Ellis now hunt for European success in Scandinavia and Germany before the international Pro Mod show returns to Santa Pod in September for another MSA/FIA/NDRS triple-crown extravaganza.

For 30 years, chief MSA scrutineer Amos Meekins has certified drag racing machinery without ever once traversing the quarter-mile. All that changed on Saturday when Top Fuel driver Jon Webster treated a surprised Mr. Meekins to a 7.91sec/169mph zip down the track in Santa Pod's two-seater dragster. Mr. Meekins was still quivering from the experience a day later but admitted he now understands precisely why he does what he does.
