Lockie and Yool win at Oulton

Calum Lockie and Andy Yool scored a memorable win at Oulton Park on Saturday (13 June) when they took Yool's Ford Anglia to victory in the 40-minute Swinging 60s race during the Classic Sports Car Club race meeting. The duo had hoped to double up and race two cars, one in each of the Swinging 60s races, and arrived at Oulton Park on Friday ready to give Andy's rebuilt 1965 Ford Mustang a debut test. Unfortunately, a small engine malady prevented them running the Mustang, so they focussed on racing the Anglia instead."So we got going with the Anglia in testing and it went very well. I only got a couple of flying laps in, but the car felt really good and very well suited to Oulton Park," said Calum. "Andy went out and did his best ever lap of Oulton."That form continued in qualifying on Saturday morning. "Andy went out first and got into the groove and went quicker again," said Lockie. "Then I did a 2m03.5s, which was second overall and second in class to a very potent Triumph Spitfire.Yool started the 40-minute race ran second and then third over the opening half of the race. "He ran beautifully in third and kept well in touch with the leaders; it was a great job. He went even quicker and ended up being something like three seconds faster than ever before at Oulton. We'd been practising driver changes and the lads did a really good job," said Calum. "I was out in 28 seconds and just in front of a train of six or seven cars." However, soon after their pit stop, the car running second spun into the tyres at Knickerbrook and that brought the safety car out.The leading Triumph Spitfire made its stop under the safety car and was out ahead of Calum in the queue, with several slower cars in between. "At the re-start, I was stuck behind a slower car and the Spitfire got away. But I worked my way through the traffic and got onto his tail. I was pushing him hard in the corners, but he could get away on the straight and he was driving very well."But just as Lockie got a strong run through Old Hall to launch an attack on the Spitfire, the race leader faltered with a mechanical problem and the Anglia was away into a clear lead. "That was Andy's first overall race win and he was very pleased. We got fastest lap as well, so it was really great. It was good to be back racing at Oulton Park for the first time in three years and the Anglia was great fun; it is such a cracking little car."A big thanks go to Andy and his wife Jean for allowing me to share his car and to Jay and Tim who did such a good job," said Calum. "My thanks also go to the CSCC for running such a friendly race meeting and to Melindi for her support." Trade support for Calum Lockie comes from Dunlop, Grand Prix Racewear, Brian James Trailers and Motul Oil.
