Two tough weekends at Spa for Lockie
Calum Lockie had two trying weekends in a row at Spa-Francorchamps with three non-finishes from three starts over the weekends of 26/27 June and 3/4 July. The first weekend marked the Britcar three-hour race on Saturday evening and Calum had been invited to share the BMW M3 of Keith Webster, who has been enjoying race coaching from Calum over recent months. "We didn't do too much running in qualifying, but were still third in class and first of the E36 M3s on the grid," said Calum.Webster was also racing in the pair of Dutch Supercar races during the weekend, but was forced to retire from the first race with a gear linkage problem. That would leave the car at the back of the grid for the second race on Sunday, but before that came the Britcar race on Saturday evening."There was a big rain storm just before the start, but Keith made a fantastic start and went through to the class lead and from 14th to 11th overall," said Calum. "He was holding the place comfortably but then, behind the safety car, the heavens opened." Doing just 50mph behind the safety car, the BMW hit standing water and aquaplaned off the track and into the barriers. The damage, which included a bent wishbone, would have taken around half an hour to repair, so the car was out before Calum had chance to drive it.To make up for not running in the Britcar race, Keith invited Calum to share the BMW in the second Dutch Supercar race on Sunday and Calum started the race from the back of the 56-car grid. "I just love that type of scenario and went from 56th into the 20s in two and a half laps," said Calum. Unfortunately, a long safety car period followed before he got just two more racing laps ahead of the mid-race pit-stop. Sadly, after only one lap of his stint, Keith toured the car back to the pits with a blown engine. "It was tough to have three non-finishes from three races, but the Geoff Steel team worked so hard," said Calum.Straight after the race weekend, Calum and his partner Melindi were busy with two days of track days with their Gold Track Driving Club, which ran perfectly in fine weather. Then after a couple of days off, when they explored the original Spa road circuit, Calum was back to racing when he shared the Ford Mustang of Andy Yool in the hour-long Swinging 60s race."In qualifying on Friday it was part wet to start with and then wet all round, but we qualified fourth in class in a grid of more than 60 cars," said Calum. "Andy made a really good start to the race and was getting quicker and quicker before he came in just before half-distance." Unfortunately, a battery problem was developing and they lost over a minute trying to get the car re-started, eventually having to bump start it to get Calum out into the race."I went out and switched off everything that I could, but the battery was getting flatter and flatter and the engine wouldn't rev. I managed to get to third and we were on for a podium, but the misfire was getting worse and I dropped back to fourth," reported Calum. Then, on the final lap the engine started to overheat and Calum was forced to cut the engine at Blanchimont, hoping to be able to coast to the finish line. "Unfortunately, it stopped at the chicane and it was really frustrating as I could see the chequered flag." However, they were eventually classified sixth in class."We spent 11 days at Spa and had a couple of tough race weekends. But both crews worked really hard and deserved more in terms of results. My thanks go to both teams; first Keith Webster and the crew at Geoff Steel Racing and particularly Rob, who worked so hard, and then to Andy Yool and his wife Jean for inviting me to share the Mustang and to Jay and Tim who did such a good job," said Calum.
