Carrera Cup GB mid-term review
Michael Caine knows that the next two races in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB, at his home track of Snetterton on 1/2 August, are very important as he battles to win the championship with the Motorbase Performance team.Currently, after 10 of the 20 races, Caine lies third in the overall standings to Tim Bridgman and Tim Harvey and he knows that a strong weekend at Snetterton is vital as the championship resumes after a seven-week mid-season break.Caine has worked hard with his sponsors to make another challenge on the Carrera Cup title possible and he says that the backing of Motorbase is critical to his racing."Without Motorbase, I'd probably not be racing this year," admits Caine. "I don't know if I'd enjoy it as much without the banter with David Bartrum during the week. Whatever he does, he wears his heart on his sleeve and he will do anything to get you to win a race. He's created an atmosphere were everything is right. The cars are always immaculate. Everything is right. I've got very loyal sponsors and they all wanted to come back and race with David and the Motorbase team this season."Caine also says that the chance to work with the team's ace engineer Patrick de Groot has been a big boost to his campaign. "I'm really starting to learn about the car with Patrick. I can just concentrate on driving the car and telling the engineer what it’s doing, rather than driving and trying to think about why the car is doing what it is doing."However, racing is not the only thing on Caine's mind as he heads into the second half of the 2009 season. He will celebrate his 40th birthday just before the races at Knockhill in mid-August and will then be married to Kim in December. He says that the church had to be close to their Newmarket home. "Kim's dad is a farmer and he doesn't fly, so it’s got to be within reach of the cows. He needs to speak to the cows at lunchtime and then get to the church!"In the meantime, it's back to racing at Snetterton where there will be typically strong home support. "My family is a fantastic support to my racing; my parents and my sister Amanda and her husband Chris. I couldn't do it without them."
