Lockie and White win at Snetterton
Calum Lockie and Paul White scored a commanding victory in the three-hour Martini Trophy race at Snetterton on Saturday (18 July) when they took a class success and third overall in White's GT4-specifcation Aston Martin V8 Vantage. They were racing the Aston for the first time and the re-creation of the famous race from the 1960s and 1970s was Calum's first race in an Aston Martin. "It went very, very well and I really enjoyed driving the Aston," said Calum.Having moved up from his Porsche 911GT3 Cup car, White used the new three-hour race as a debut run for the Aston and took advantage of a Gold Track day at Silverstone in the preceding week to get used to the car. "I did a few laps during our track day and then we had a 50-minute test on Friday," said Lockie. White then went out first in qualifying on Saturday morning, running the required three laps on new tyres before handing the car over to Calum. "It was getting quicker and quicker as the track dried and we ended up third overall, and first in class by two and a half seconds."White took the first stint in the three-hour race, which included two mandatory three-minute pit stops to allow for refuelling. "Paul started on new tyres, so he had to be a little careful at the start. Les Goble got ahead initially in his GT4 Aston, but then Paul chased him down and moved ahead before going clear at between one and two seconds a lap," said Calum. "Paul drove a beautiful stint and ran for an hour and 20 minutes, by which time he led the class by 25s."During the first stop, the team changed the left hand tyres and refuelled before sending Calum back into the race. "I just kept pushing at a sensible pace," he said. It wasn't all plain sailing, however, as the car ran out of fuel at Coram on the lap he was coming in to the pits. "It spluttered at Coram and then cut-out, but I was able to get it into neutral and roll into the pits. That was a bit of a fright!"With two new front tyres fitted, Calum rejoined the race and in a total stint of an hour and 25 minutes he was able to extend their lead to a massive five laps. With such a lead, they decided to make a final fuel stop as a precaution and Paul took over the car for the final 15 minutes. "Paul brought the car home first in class, third overall and with fastest lap and class pole. Steve Scott and his team did a fantastic job and everything ran perfectly. It was a great debut for the car," said Calum."Thanks are due to Paul for putting me in the car and to Steve and his team. I'd also like to thank Richard Jackson and the Aston Martin Owners' Club for putting on a great race, as well as all the marshals at Snetterton."Trade support for Calum Lockie comes from Dunlop, Grand Prix Racewear, Brian James Trailers and Motul Oil.
