FMS Hungarian Formula BMW Summary

The fifth round of the Formula BMW Europe championship took place this weekend in Hungary, at the Hungaroring, near Budapest. Doru Sechelariu, Ramon Pineiro and Kevin Gilardoni were in action for Fisichella Motor Sport International.

The race weekend comprised of a free practice followed by a qualifying session ahead of the two 11-lap races. The grid positions for race one were determined by each driver's quickest qualifying time, with their second quickest time taken to set the grid for race two.

Doru Sechelariu: Got the weekend off to a flying start by finishing Friday practice second fastest. Unfortunately struggled to convert that to qualifying and lined up 13th on the grid for race one.  Improved one position in the race to finish 12th. Started race two from 14th and crossed the line 13th.

Kevin Gilardoni: Qualified for race one in 21st position but did not finish the race. Began in 21st again for the second race and raced well to finish in 17th, an improvement of four positions.

Ramon Pineiro: Forced to start race one from the back of the grid from 26th due to a penalty imposed at the last race but came through the field to cross the line in 17th position. Started from 19th in Sunday's race and made up four positions to finish 15th.

The sixth round of Formula BMW Europe will take place from 21-23 August at the Valencia circuit in Spain.

Paolo Coloni, Team Principal: "The weekend started well with Doru second in free practice but we didn't manage to continue that performance through until qualifying. It is so difficult to overtake at Hungary that qualifying really sets you up for the races so it was frustrating. At least we showed promise and we need to build on that over the next races. It's good to see an improvement and now we must see what happens in Valencia."
