Matech celebrates class victory at Spa
The Matech GT Racing Team took victory in the G3 class for GT3 homologated cars at the 24-hours of Spa on Sunday. The German Thomas Mutsch and Marc Hennerici, the Belgian Maxime Martin and the Swiss Peter Wyss finished in a remarkable tenth overall position with their Ford GT3 car. "If I hadn’t been a sportsman in my early years I would surely have died several times from a heart attack over the last 24 hours” – said Martin Bartek, Team Principal and Owner. "This was the first ever 24 hour race event that I ever attended or participated in, and I did not expect such a thrilling experience. Every hour of the race brought its own unexpected surprises, which the team managed to handle in such an efficient way that I cannot be anything else but extremely proud of the work the drivers and mechanics did. Once more I’ve been able to experience that success relies greatly on the people forming a team. Today’s success has whet my appetite for future challenges ...”During the three part qualifying session the number 121 car got off to a good start and took the eleventh position on the grid. Although the race has had its challenges even in the last minutes it has brought an excellent result for the Matech GT Racing Team. The Ford GT3 of Mutsch/Hennerici/Martin/Wyss broke into the top-ten for the first time after the 16th hour of the race. After 24-hours or 519 laps the number 121 car also held tenth place and the class victory was in safe hands. "For me this race has been very special because Matech GT Racing contested a 24 hour race for the very first time and the whole team, especially the mechanics, did a great job because sometimes they had to fix problems very quickly and they did it superbly" – said Thomas Mutsch. "I was proud to be part of this starting with the organization and then being here as a driver. The best thing is that we have won the GT3 category which is a great achievement for this new race car.”Marc Hennerici added: "I joined Matech GT Racing in 2008 and we have been very strong since the first practice but we’ve had a lot of bad luck, however, I hope that this victory will change it and it will become a success story.”The Belgian Maxime Martin was also overjoyed: "I think it’s really fantastic for the whole team because it was the first time to compete in a 24 hour race, and it was already a win with the Ford GT3. I would like to thank the whole team for placing their trust in me as one of the drivers. The team did a fantastic job concerning all the small problems it had to deal with. I really enjoyed this race and to work with this team.""It was a fantastic experience to drive such a legendary car, the Ford GT on a legendary circuit like Spa with this professional team, the Matech GT Racing Team” – said Peter Wyss. "It’s certainly a fantastic achievement for Martin Bartek and for the whole team to win this hard race at the first attempt because you have to consider that Martin Bartek has developed a winning race car on the basis of a road car without factory support. I hope for them in the future they will have more victories like this.”The second Ford GT3 driven by the Brazilian quartet Constantino Junior, Xandy Negrão, Clemente Lunardi and Andreas Mattheis held an excellent 15th position up to the twelve hour mark, before they were forced to retire because of technical problems after 272 laps
