Lawsons Carrera Cup GB mid-term review

Robert Lawson will resume his challenge for the pro-am1 title in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB when the second half of the championship starts at Snetterton on 1/2 August.Currently, after 10 of the 20 races, Lawson has built a 21-point lead in the pro-am1 standings and the Richmond (Yorkshire) racer is also fifth overall in the championship. Racing with the JHR squad, Lawson has taken six pro-am1 victories, including double wins at Oulton Park and his home track of Croft. But Lawson says that it has taken a lot of hard work to get to this point, and he knows that he has to keep pushing hard to fend off determined pro-am1 rivals like Tony Gilham (Red Line Racing), Ollie Jackson (Motorbase Performance) and Glynn Geddie (Team Parker Racing)."I've only ever raced front-wheel drive cars and this is only my fourth season of racing," said Lawson. "It was always going to be a big challenge this year. The team is new to the Porsche as well, so we're on a big learning curve. But we've shown that the team is doing a good job and I'm starting to get to grips with the car."Lawson says he is looking at the Porsche Carrera Cup GB as more than a one-year programme. "It's got to be more than a one-year plan. We're competing with teams who have been doing this for five years and they've got their cars pretty well sorted and they've had some quality drivers producing some quality data, which makes things a lot easier."However, Lawson has shown excellent pace and is currently sitting behind the championship top four of Tim Bridgman, Tim Harvey, Michael Caine and James Sutton. "I'm pleased with the progress but we've got to keep pushing forward. It's a fabulous car and a fabulous championship to be involved with. It's quite an experience!"
