If Formula 3 is considered the University of Motorsport, then the Masters of Formula 3 (F3 Masters) could be its post-graduate examination.
The F3 Masters, first run in 1991 after the cancellation in 1990 of the FIA European Formula Three Cup, is an international meeting between drivers from various national championships across Europe. It has also been considered the unofficial European F3 championship.
Future F1 stars, such as David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton, shone at the F3 Masters before their glittering careers took off.
The trend continues. Max Chilton, now driving for Carlin Motorsport, set the fastest lap of 1:31.197 in the 2008 F3 Masters at Zolder.
Back at its home territory of Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands since last year, the 2010 F3 Masters will be powered by Sunoco Race Fuels.
The deal was inked today by Erik Weijers, COO at Zandvoort, and Anders Hildebrand, MD of Europe and Middle East Sunoco distributor Anglo American Oil Company Ltd (AAOC), based in Wareham, Dorset.
Said Weijers, “It’s great to cement the Masters of F3 at its spiritual home of Zandvoort with AAOC and Sunoco Race Fuels.
“The fuel is well known and respected by drivers for its consistency of quality and with such a reliable supplier as AAOC behind it, we can look forward to a typically excellent Masters of F3 on June 5th & 6th.”
Hildebrand added, “The F3 Masters is one of the most enjoyable highlights on the European racing scene and it is a privilege to be involved with it. Many great drivers come through the ranks of F3 and Sunoco is, of course, always keen to assist in fostering new talent at this great track and elsewhere.”
The Masters of Formula 3 at Circuit Park Zandvoort– the town is birthplace of versatile driver and team principal Jan Lammers – is on the weekend of June 5th-6th 2010. The weekend also features a Red Bull F1 demo.
