BERWICK No.1 Adrian Rymel is set for an operation on Saturday after suffering a broken neck in a crash at Edinburgh. Rymel was involved in a collision with partner Marcin Rempala when thePole's chain snapped during the first race of the Bandit' challenge match at Armadale. The popular Czech rider was taken directly from the circuit to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with the track's paramedical team in attendance, and the meeting was abandoned.A scan confirmed a broken bone in his neck, and Rymel will now be transferred to Edinburgh's Western General Hospital for the operation.Berwick owner John Anderson attended the hospital and praised the medical staff at both Edinburgh Speedway and the Royal Infirmary. He said: "It is awful to have Adrian suffer this injury from a simple-looking incident. But I'm gratified that he is receiving such excellent attention - he's in the best of hands."

COVENTRY blew the race for the play-offs wide open with a stunning 46-44 win at Peterborough - their first Elite League success at the Showground since April 2003.Krzysztof Kasprzak and Chris Harris secured a crucial last-race 3-3 for the Bees, Harris getting the better of the Panthers' Troy Batchelor in a spectacular battle for third place. Coventry's Polish youngster Przemyslaw Pawlicki also played a key part inthe win with ten (paid 13) as he and ex-Panther Lewis Bridger dominated at reserve. The result means the Bees now travel to Belle Vue on Monday on a run of sixwins from seven, and are in with a realistic chance of making the top four.Manager Alun Rossiter said: "It was fantastic. It got a bit jittery after Heat 10, but once we edged back ahead I always thought we would be strong enough to hold on."I had a dilemma for Heat 15 because Chris hadn't had his best night, but with that sort of pressure it wouldn't have been fair to put a youngster like Pawlicki into that situation. I was toying with the idea, but I felt my captain was the man, and he showed us why he's the captain with that ride."

PETERBOROUGH manager Trevor Swales delivered a scathing assessment of his team's performance in their home defeat by Coventry. The Panthers were beaten on their home circuit for the second time in a week and now face a nervous trip to Lakeside on Monday with their play-off place under serious threat.Swales said: "We've got riders who either don't want to do it, or aren't capable of doing it. Some of them have got to put their hands up and admit that the last couple of meetings they have been absolute rubbish. It's about time that they realise that."To lose two meetings at home in a week is totally unacceptable and I thought that we were a better team than that, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe we are just sixth place material, and not top four material. I think some of the riders need to say what they feel; because I know that personally I'm absolutely gutted. If we're being realistic, that has put us out of the play-offs."

LAKESIDE boss Jon Cook is urging his side to put their shock home draw against depleted Swindon behind them in time for a crunch meeting on Monday. The Hammers would have secured a play-off place by beating the Robins, butthe 45-45 draw leaves them needing to beat Peterborough at Purfleet to make sure.Cook said: "We win and lose as a team and there are no individua lrecriminations. Everyone had at least one ride when they could have done better, and we intend to come out fighting on Monday and earn our place inthe Play Offs by right, without relying on results elsewhere to go our way. "It's an exciting prospect for the League to have positions up for grabs right until the cut off date, but our destiny is still firmly in our own hands and we have the chance to bounce back very quickly in a meeting that promises to be a superb one-off."Cook has also confirmed he would be willing not to undertake the Hammers'trip to Swindon on Thursday on the basis that play-off rivals Peterborough and Coventry are also short of one away match each due to the adverse weather in August.Cook added: "We would not object if the three clubs should be judged across15 away meetings equally."
