Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Battle Set for Silverstone Finale

The inaugural Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge draws to a close this coming weekend with the final three races of the season at Silverstone. While Jim Geddie has been the man to beat at most of the meetings, it is Bertie Carruthers and Peter Smallwood who are battling for Driver of the Year honours, just two points apart after eight races with three points scoring opportunities remaining.

In a competitive gesture, Carruthers is stepping down to Class Two for the final meeting to race Smallwood head-to-head, his normal 997 GT3 being replaced by a 996 GT3 for this weekend. Smallwood has been the man to beat in Class Two all season, despite having only made his race debut in the equivalent fixture last season, but faces his strongest class opposition of the year with rivals including the experienced Paul Winter coming out for Silverstone.

Geddie heads the Class One runners, but was pushed hard at the previous rounds at Oulton Park by newcomer Stephen Ritchie, who led a race for the first time in his short career and has got quicker by the race. Leyton Clarke and Gary Marsh join the series for the first time at Silverstone.

The meeting is also going to feature a handicap element for the Bill Taylor Memorial trophy, an annual staple of Porsche Club racing in recent seasons, with an invitation class that will see some older Porsches take on the rapid GT3s. In what should be a huge grid of Porsches, the GT3 Cup Challenge runners will share the circuit with the Porsche Club Championship racers.

The three Porsche races are main support events for the Silverstone 24-Hour race, and will take place on the Bridge circuit layout – what was until this season the Grand Prix version of the track. The long straights and wide circuit provide quick and exciting racing, with an entry of over 35 cars expected.

Qualifying is at 10.05 on Friday morning, with the first race at 14.30 on Friday afternoon. Saturday sees the final two 25-minute races, the first at 09.35, with the season finale scheduled for 14.05.
