Porsche Carrera Cup GB to race at the Nurburgring

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB will be part of the world’s greatest Porsche race when up to 200 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racers line up for the Porsche Carrera World Cup on the Nürburgring Nordschleife on Saturday 25 June.As many as 30 competitors from the Carrera Cup GB and the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Challenge will contest the race, which will take place prior to the start of the 39th ADAC 24-hour race. It will run over a distance of six laps, approximately 95 miles, and more than 250,000 spectators are expected to watch the race.In order to compete on the greatest race track in the world, the Carrera Cup will step down from the Croft BTCC weekend (18/19 June) as there would be insufficient time between the two events. Therefore in 2011, the Carrera Cup will be contested over 19 races, 18 at the remaining nine BTCC events along with the Porsche Carrera World Cup. The Nurburgring race will accrue a single set of points, but double prize money will be on offer.Reigning Carrera Cup GB champion Tim Harvey says he relishes the prospect of competing in the Porsche Carrera World Cup. "I've always said that the Nurburgring is the greatest piece of tarmac in the world. It's the ultimate drivers' challenge and I can't wait to race there against the best Carrera Cup drivers in the world."Harvey says that detailed knowledge of the track will be a massive factor in determining the overall result. "I did the 24-hour race a few years ago, so I know where it goes, but I certainly don’t know it like the back of my hand. It's impossible to ever know it as well as the people who have done thousands of laps there. Circuit knowledge and confidence is more important than car set up. I have a healthy respect for the place."The Porsche Carrera World Cup forms the season highlight of Porsche’s 18 brand trophy series worldwide. This race counts as a round of several other national Carrera Cups, including Germany and Scandinavia. The entry for the race will be divided into two classes: the 911 GT3 Cup with 3.6-litre engines from 2007 to 2009 model years (400 to 420 hp) and the 3.8-litre versions of the 2010 and 2011 model years (450 hp).
