Motorcycle Journalism Then and Now, National Motor Museum - Beaulieu

On Saturday 19th March, the National Motor Museum plays host to two ‘giants’ from the world of motorcycling journalism, for what promises to be a lively and entertaining evening.

Motorcycle journalism has changed enormously since the halcyon days of the Blue ’Un and Green ’Un; not only in the way news reaches the printed page, but even the manner in which it’s now written. Hot lead and typewriters have given way to litho and laptops.  And, when it comes to testing the latest machines, it’s rare that the controls fall-readily-to-hand!

Who better than Mick Woollett and Alan Cathcart to provide an insight into how it happened back then, and what’s going on right now?

Mick Woollett cut his teeth as a Grand Prix sidecar passenger, going on to become Sports Editor of MotorCycling. He was responsible for numerous “scoops” during road racing’s Golden Era, often to the annoyance of the factories concerned!  But he always survived their reaction, and was later rewarded with the editorship of the Motor Cycle.

No one within the contemporary magazine scene is more widely read than Alan Cathcart. His widely respected reports and articles, which include riding state-of-the-art racers and exclusive interviews with factory chiefs, are syndicated in 50+ countries around the world.

The evening’s compere, motorcycling historian Mike Jackson, began his series of off-road forums in 1997. Following over ten Evenings dealing with mud and rocks he says he is looking forward to asking his highly experienced guests about tarmac, the best and worst editors, their scoops, deadlines they nearly missed, and much more besides!

The evening, starting at 8pm, will take place in the Lecture Theatre of the National Motor Museum Trust Centre. A pay bar will be available for wines, beer, soft drinks and hot beverages.

Tickets are £10 (with all profits going to the National Motor Museum Trust) and are available by contacting Theresa Browning on 01590 614792, email: theresa.browning@beaulieu.co.uk
