Whilst the heart of the Castle Combe Circuit's racing year is its trio of home grown championships, many drivers have neither the time, inclination or budget to contest a whole season of races.
Recognising this and reflecting the economic climate, the Castle Combe Racing Club has come up with a raft of new races and mini series designed to attract the occasional competitor.
Covering everything from 60 year old classics to, in theory, a suitably silenced Formula 1 car, it's hoped the races will bring back some of the fun which many modern formulae seem to have forgotten.
Castle Combe Racing Club's competition secretary, Haydn Earl said, "Many championships impose strict conditions and tyre rules which preven tdrivers from entering a visiting race even if they live frustratingly close to the circuit. We've designed these races to admit as many different cars as possible, but with a class system, so everyone has the chance of some glory.
"Our only restriction is the noise limit which we have to adhere strictly to."
Likely to be very popular given the attention previous, similar, 'one off' races have attracted, is the Open Saloon Car series.
This will also incorporate the AAA Saloons for four wheel drive turbo-cars these being no longer eligible for the Castle Combe Saloon car championship. At least 3 rounds are planned, starting with the opening meeting on Easter Monday, April 25.
The Open Sports and GT series is designed to welcome back the likes of the powerful Jades which aren't eligible for the circuit's Sports and GT championship, following the introduction of a 2 litre capacity limit.
Formula Mono Libre is where the quickest entries may be found, with unlimited capacity single seaters on slick tyres returning to the Wiltshire circuit for the first time since the last Formula Libre racein September 1989, won by Rob Cox in an ex Formula 1 Lola LC88.
Formula Libre races at Castle Combe stretch all the way back to 1950, although at some points, notably the 1960s, such races also included sports-racing cars.
With Tour Britannia coming to the circuit over the weekend of June 18 and 19, the club is arranging a pair of twenty minute races for a variety of classics. Sub 2 litre cars from 1951 to the American muscle cars built before 1981 are eligible, six classes absorbing everything in between.
