The Sunoco Daytona Challenge is officially launching next week but 2 drivers have already been hot on the case to sign up!
With the excitement of the recent Rolex 24 At Daytona still fresh in all our minds, the race is on for the 2012 challenge champion.
Ross Kaiser won the 2011 Sunoco Daytona Challenge and with it a seat in a Daytona Prototype (DP) at the Daytona International Speedway. Driving for Doran Racing in the #77 Office Depot Ford Dallara, Kaiser unfortunately didn’t cross the finish line after the car had to retire due to two race incidents.
Now in its third year the race to win the next challenge is set to commence with drivers signing up officially from next week , two drivers who have already signed up for the 2012 challenge are British GT driver Matt Bell and Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship driver Keith Robinson.
This is the first year Britcar drivers been selected to enter the challenge. Robinson is no stranger to endurance racing; he was part of the team that won last year’s Silverstone Britcar 24hrs. Keith will again be racing with team MJC this year and with an impressive performance last year will definitely be a one to look out for in the challenge.
‘I can’t think why anyone wouldn’t sign up for the chance of a lifetime, I’m so grateful to Witt Gamski (team owner) for letting me race this year and giving me the chance to compete in the challenge’ commented the 38 year old.
Bell, driving an Audi R8 for United Autosports in the British GT championship, has been a regular to the winner’s podium after competing in a variety of disciplines. Matt accompanied the United Autosports team to Daytona for the 2011 Rolex 24 to support fellow Brits and team mates Mark Blundell and Martin Brundle in the United Autosports Daytona Prototype. It was here Matt realised just how much it would mean to him to compete in the Rolex 24.
‘Daytona is amazing; with an atmosphere you can’t explain. I was lucky enough to go and watch the team compete where they finished an impressive fourth place’ commented the young driver.
‘Whilst I was watching Mark and Martin race I was thinking about how much I would like to do it too. When I found out about the Sunoco Daytona Challenge I couldn’t wait to sign up - win and you’re on the start line with drivers from NASCAR, GRAND-AM, F1 to name but a few. To race in the Rolex 24 At Daytona would be unreal.’
With the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge set to coincide with the Rolex 24 50th anniversary it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity and the chance to take part in landmark event.
