Round 1: Lydden, 27 March
Scotsman Andy Scott (Dumfries) won the first round of the Quaife MSA British Rallycross Championship at Lydden on Sunday (March 27), scoring a maiden victory for his new Tony Bardy Motorsport-run Ford Focus ST and filling the team with confidence ahead of next month's European championship counter at the Kent circuit.
Scott qualified on the second row of the grid for the Supercar A final, the front row occupied by Liam Doran, Belgian Jochen Coox and David Binks. A crash in the first corner in which Doran's Citroën C4 rolled heavily, caused the race to be stopped and when the restart came, Scott grabbed an immediate lead.
Binks and Julian Godfrey (Heathfield) gave chase but ran into problems, Binks suffering a puncture on his Fiesta while Godfrey retired his similar car after sliding wide in Chesson's Drift, hitting the barrier and damaging the rear suspension. When Coox (Skoda Fabia) and compatriot Patrick Van Mechelen (Subaru Impreza) also suffered punctures, the pressure was off Scott who matched pace with precision to take a clear victory.
The problems that befell other drivers helped Pat Doran and Andy Grant who progressed from the B final to the main event. Grant, who had worked through the night in the days leading up to the event to complete a rebuild on the engine of his Ford Focus, passed Doran on the last lap to snatch second place away from the 2010 champion.
