Eurocup Megane Catalunya Collective testing

Comini and Schothorst in contention  The trend that emerged at Motorland Aragon was confirmed at the Catalunya Circuit, with Stefano Comini (Oregon Team) and Bas Schothorst (TDS Racing) set to be serious contenders for the title. With the best lap time over the two days of collective testing in Barcelona, Stefano Comini has certainly made his mark ahead of the season kick-off in a few weeks time at Motorland Aragon.  Preparations for the impending season's Eurocup Mégane Trophy 2011 were brought to a conclusion on the Catalunya track, with two days of collective testing. For these tests, French driver Boris Bouvier, better known as a single-seat driver, joined the peloton aboard a Lompech Sport car. The meeting began sedately enough on Friday, as drivers eased their way into the session in the first half hour. Bas Schothorst went to the top of the timing sheets with a lap time of 1'53''408, immediately upped the pace to consolidate his first place, in 1'53''199. The end of the session saw the Dutchman's leadership lost to the driver already looking like his best enemy, Stefano Comini. Lapping in 1'52''892, the Swiss driver thus finished the morning with the lead. Several drivers launched into a race simulation in the afternoon. We had to wait for the final minutes of the day to see the lap times come down again, on fresh tyres. Stefano Comini improved his reference time, with a 1'52''669 lap. Bas Schothorst responded tit for tat, with a 1'52''252. But the final attempt by Stefano Comini did the trick. With a lap time of 1'51''689, Stefano Comini could be satisfied with his performance. The second day followed a similar pattern, with Stefano Comini and Bas Schothorst taking charge of matters in the morning session. The Dutchman was the first to take the lead, improving the reference time lap after lap. He brought the time down to 1'52''393, before ultimately being ousted from top spot by Stefano Comini, who ended the morning in 1'52''091 in almost summer conditions. In the afternoon, Boris Bouvier continued his apprenticeship at the wheel of Mégane Trophy, but subsequently ran off at the end of the Catalan straight. Car came off somewhat the worse for wear, but driver suffered no damage. Bas Schothorst led the session in 1'53''490. But the teams exploited this session mainly to focus on simulating pit stops, so as to be as prepared as possible for the tests they are about to face in this forthcoming 2011 season. Fabien Thuner (Boutsen Energy Racing) took the opportunity to visit the top of the timesheets, with a 1'52''792 lap. The teams didn't bring out fresh tyres so it was Fabien Thuner who claimed the best time of this last session of collective testing. Quotes  Stefano Comini: "During these tests we worked extensively on simulations to explore the new tyre element. We did a race simulation, a fair number of pit stops and tested different set-ups. Overall we're going pretty well on this track. We are ready."  Boris Bouvier: "I'm coming here from Formula 3. The Eurocup Mégane Trophy is completely different, with a heavier car but very nice to drive. This will be my first season competing in a touring car formula, and I'm looking to finish in the top 5. These tests were encouraging, up until I span out on Saturday. But I remain satisfied with what I was able to show behind the wheel during those two days."  Fabien Thuner: "I'm pretty happy because I finished the testing by improving on this morning's time. The car drove well and, unlike my teammate Michele Faccin (steering problem) we have had any difficulties. I'm ready for the first race at Motorland Aragon and I'm hopeful that I'll be fighting for the title! But I remain cautious: the Eurocup Mégane Trophy races are full of action and always fiercely contested right up to the checkered flag!"
