Richardson Racing make family assault on Ginetta GT Supercup
Richardson Racing can today confirm that it will launch an assault on the newly named Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup, with a two-car entry into the class for the G50 model.Ensuring the 2011 season remains a family affair, the two cars for the Grantham-based team will be driven by brother and sister Andrew and Louise Richardson; both of whom make the step into the Ginetta GT Supercup having enjoyed success on track in 2010.The team will be headed by Andrew and Louise’s father Gwyn, who will run the two cars along with an enthusiastic group of volunteers, including a number on university students starting out on their own motorsport careers.Andrew will move into the Supercup for his third season of car racing having spent the last two years competing in the Ginetta Challenge, where he finished second in 2010 on the back of a season that saw him visit the podium no fewer than twelve times, with three victories.Having had chance to sample the G50 during the recent Ginetta Media Day at Silverstone, the 19-year-old – who is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Nottingham – heads into the opening round of the new season at Brands Hatch this weekend (2/3 April) keen to make an impression.“The G50 is a brilliant car to drive, it’s really quick and there is a lot more grip than with the G20 I drove last season,” he said. “The jump between the cars hasn’t been as big as I expected it to be and in testing at Silverstone both me and Louise were only two-tenths off the pole time for the G50s last season.“There is no reason why we can’t be aiming for the top five in class this weekend as we have both been quick in testing and with some updates on the car, we will only get quicker. It will also be interesting to see how we do on new tyres but we stand a good chance of being up near the front of the class and if we could get onto the podium this weekend, it would be brilliant.”Younger sister Louise, who recently turned 18, is no stranger to the British Touring Car Championship support paddock having emerged as one of the stars of the Ginetta Junior Championship in both 2009 and 2010.Louise graduates into the Ginetta GT Supercup on the back of a fine season in 2010 where she finished third in the Junior series, with twelve podiums, including two wins, helping the TJ Motorsport team to secure the teams’ championship.Louise, who was nominated for the BWRDC Gold Star in recognition of her achievements, is also aiming high as she heads into her Brands Hatch debut.“The G50 has been a lot different to the Ginetta Junior car as you have slick tyres and more aero on the car, but it’s a relatively easy to drive and I’ve been able to pick things up quite quickly,” she said. “Both cars have been going well in testing although there has been a small problem with my car, but when we have that sorted for the weekend, there is no reason why we can’t be aiming for the top five in our class.“There are quite a few drivers who I raced against last season in the Juniors who will compete in the G50s this season so it will be good to race against some of my old rivals and also against some of the top drivers who Andrew competed against in the Challenge last year. It’s going to be an interesting year.”The Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup will feature three races at Brands Hatch this weekend, with the opening 16 lap encounter due to start at 14:15 on Saturday 2 April, with two further races running to 24 laps at 17:05 on Saturday and 15:25 on Sunday 3 April (schedule changes permitting).Sunday race action can be viewed on ITV4, ITV4 HD and on ITV.com as part of the live coverage of the opening three races of the 2011 BTCC season, with the broadcast running from 11:00 to 18:00.
