NEWCASTLE secured a crucial early-season away win with a dramatic one-point success at Rye House. The Diamonds trailed by three points going into the last race but a 5-1 from Mark Lemon and Stuart Robson, with Jason Doyle falling on the last bend when chasing, turned the meeting in the visitors' favour.Manager George English said: "Winning down here takes some doing, so we rightly have to pour ample praise on our big scorers tonight with Mark, Stuart and Derek Sneddon all catching the eye."But we need to work hard with Rene Bach who is going through a rough patch at present, but we will get him back to his amazing best, for we all know when he is on top form he's nothing short of stunning."

SOMERSET promoter Debbie Hancock was full of praise for her side after a 50-43 win at local rivals Newport took the Rebels second in the early Premier League table. The visitors took the lead in the second heat and were never headed thereafter, a maximum 5-1 race win in Heat 14 sealing the victory and Cory Gathercole's last-heat win making sure of all four points from the meeting.Hancock said: "All the guys deserve credit for the way they rode tonight, and whilst I wouldn't want to single out any rider you have to say that Dakota North had a stormer of a meeting, scoring paid 12 from his five rides and this on a track he has never ridden on before."The team were disappointed to have dropped a point in our home match against Rye House on Friday night, but they certainly made up for that in the best possible way."

LAKESIDE promoter Jon Cook was appreciative of the efforts of Jonas Davidsson in the Hammers' opening Elite League victory against Wolverhampton on Friday. The Swedish star rejoined the Purfleet club at short notice as cover for the unavailable Piotr Swiderski, and that arrangement could continue into next week.Cook said: "I have to personally thank Jonas for going the extra mile for the Hammers cause with his paid nine points that included the shepherding home of Kyle (Legault) to seal the match in Heat 14. That was what we had both hoped for."He rode a bike that he had never seen before and an engine that, due to a mid-week mix up with his own, was our track spare so his performance was rather special. He is already keen to continue next Friday for us against the Belle Vue Aces and we will make a decision midweek on that one."

SWINDON are hopeful of being able to track their Polish duo Tomasz Chrzanowski and Maciej Janowski in their opening Elite League fixture on Monday. The Robins travel to Belle Vue having seen their preparations hampered by the issue of Polish riders and the new silencers, but further talks are taking place in a bid to resolve matters.Co-owner Gary Patchett said: "It's been a nightmare for the club and we are keeping our fingers crossed for a satisfactory conclusion over the weekend."Should that be the case both Tomasz and Maciej will be flying into the country on Monday for their first meeting in Swindon colours this season."
