Breeze Takes Second Ginetta Podium Of Weekend

Carl Breeze delivered one of the drives of the weekend at Brands Hatch on Sunday, 3rd April, during the third round of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup - the Total Control Racing star rising from ninth on the grid to secure his second podium of the event and, with it, second in the championship. Following engine problems in qualifying on Saturday, which he overcame to post a third place finish in round one, and a gearbox change ahead of round two, the 29-year-old hoped for a much more straightforward day on Sunday and he duly delivered a tremendous performance. Lining up on the fifth row of the grid, Breeze made a blistering start and displayed great awareness to avoid two stalled cars as he scorched towards Paddock Hill Bend. Moving into the top five behind team-mate Joachim Ritter, who started on the third row, Breeze then made his way past on lap two at McLaren. On the next lap, Breeze produced another great move at the same corner to take third and he then set about closing down the top two. Reeling off a series of fastest laps, he then managed to seize second place on lap seven just before the Safety Car was deployed due to a collision at Druids. At the re-start on lap 11, Breeze held second position and Ritter ran strongly in sixth but on lap 15 the Switzerland based businessman had an unfortunate excursion at McLaren which ended his race - a real disappointment after another terrific showing. Another Safety Car period closed up the field again on lap 17 and at the second restart Breeze set about pressuring race leader Tom Sharp. Posting his quickest lap on the 21st tour, less than 0.1 seconds shy of the fastest lap of all, the TCR ace pressed on but had to settle for a nonetheless superb runner-up spot. "Regardless of the problems Carl had to contend with this weekend he did a great job but when you consider all of the issues we had to deal with, his performance was outstanding", said Lee Brookes, team principal of TCR, "He got his head down and made something positive out of a very difficult weekend. To be second in the points with two podiums really is a great result after everything. "Joachim was really happy with the car and it's such a shame his race ended how it did as he's been very quick this weekend. On his pace he showed he should be in the top six in the points so that's given us a lot of confidence with him for the rest of the season." Rookie Grice races well to top six finish in Clio Cup Following James Dixon's race winning exploits during Saturday's opening round of the 2011 AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK, everyone at TCR had high hopes for another strong outing in race two and there was some success for karting graduate Tom Grice who raced brilliantly to take a top six finish. Dixon started the encounter second on the grid but at the first corner his car was tagged while dicing in the lead bunch and he was powerless to prevent an enforced spin. Eventually able to recover, he joined the tail of the field but more drama ensued for TCR at McLaren when a subsequent incident caught up team-mates Nicolas Hamilton and Mark Proctor. Resulting in a disappointing retirement for former British Touring Car Championship racer Proctor, Hamilton - younger brother of Grand Prix racer Lewis - managed to recover and he lapped with ever improving pace to post a 15th place finish in the end. His quickest lap was just 0.9 seconds shy of that posted by race winner, and double Clio Cup Champion, Paul Rivett, a superb effort in only his second ever race. Grice held 10th place following a three lap Safety Car period, required to recover Proctor's car, and over the next half dozen laps he made fantastic progress to climb into the top six. Lapping only three 1,00ths shy of the fastest lap of the race, he got stronger as the race wore and ended as the top TCR runner in sixth - third in the Graduate Cup class. Dixon, meanwhile, recovered to 13th position. "Tom had a very good race to finish sixth from ninth on the grid, he was less than a 10th of a second outside the fastest lap so that was great - he did a top job and we were really impressed", said Brookes, "James couldn't do anything about the incident he got caught up in, he was pushed round and that ruined his chance of another podium. It was very disappointing but just one of those things. "Mark's had a bit of a nightmare weekend really in the end, he made a good start in the first race on Saturday and then he and Nicolas got caught up together in Sunday's race when there was some contact. We know Mark will bounce back at Donington, he's a strong racer, and we're all delighted with the progress Nicolas has made so far. His pace is improving all the time."  There are just two weeks to wait until the next instalment of both the AirAsia Renault Clio Cup UK and the Ginetta GT Supercup at Donington Park, Leicestershire, over the weekend 16th/17th April.
