First UK Win For Impeccable Al Harthy At Donington

Ahmad Al Harthy took his first victory on UK soil during the third round of the 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship at Donington Park today, Sunday, 17th April, and with it made history as the first Omani to stand atop the Pro-Am 1 podium. At the end of a truly impeccable drive, the Oman Air Racing Team driver couldn't hide his delight and yet more success followed in round four when he secured an excellent second place finish in Pro-Am 1 to move into the runner-up spot in the class driver standings."I can't believe it, I can't believe I've finally won my first race in the UK!", said the beaming 29-year-old, "I really had a feeling we could do this today but to actually take my first win is amazing, it's an unbelievable result. I did my best, I knew we could do this and we delivered. It was a very hard race, so hard to stay ahead of some really quick guys but we did it - I'm so, so happy."Ahmad began the second weekend of the season in his usual positive frame of mind and produced some sensational lap times during testing on Thursday to set the scene well. In qualifying he wasn't quite able to get the space he wanted for clear enough laps but in the races his true pace shone through once more.Starting round three second in Pro-Am 1, Ahmad made a terrific getaway and ran in the thick of the action to lap within just four 10ths of a second of Pro-Am1 leader Jonas Gelzinis' pace. Fending off the attentions of his pursuers, the Oman Air, Nawras, National Bank of Oman, Brand Oman, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs and Oman Ministry of Tourism backed racer looked very impressive.Comfortably holding second in class, everything changed on lap 10 when Gelzinis spun out of the Pro-Am 1 lead exiting the Old Hairpin and Ahmad went through to open up an advantage at the front of over three and a half seconds. With 13 laps remaining, the Muscat-born driver knew he had a long way to go and remaining calm would be crucial. Keeping a cool head he pressed on and took his first Pro-Am 1 victory, and maiden win in the UK since beginning his British motor racing career in 2007, by more than five seconds.Lining-up second in Pro-Am 1 for round four, Ahmad got a great launch to stay ahead of Pro-Am 1 rivals Derek Pierce, Alex Martin, Rory Butcher and Daniele Perfetti at the start and remained there to the flag on lap 23. Lapping strongly throughout, he produced a best time a mere 0.2 seconds shy of the quickest Pro-Am 1 lap of the race to cap off a truly memorable weekend."It really has been the best weekend of my career, we've had great pace since the test on Thursday and even though qualifying wasn't quite as good as it should have been the races were amazing", added Ahmad, "I can't wait now for Thruxton in a couple of weeks, I can't explain how happy I feel!"There is just a fortnight to wait until the next installment of Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship action with rounds five and six taking place at the ultra-fast Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire over the weekend 30th April/1st May.Provisional 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship 'Pro-Am 1' Standings (after Rd4):1st Jonas Gelzinis, 43pts; 2nd Ahmad Al Harthy, 24pts
