Team Parker Racing continued their successful start to the Porsche Carrera Cup GB season with another victory at Donington Park to make it three out of three, only to finally lose their unbeaten record in the second race of the day.Parker with Juta driver Euan Hankey drove a superb race from fourth on the grid to notch up his second win of the year. The Somerset man added third position later on and now moves up to third in the championship. It was not such a good story for team-mate Stephen Jelley, who led the championship coming to his local venue after a storming opening weekend of the season at Brands Hatch. Unfortunately, Jelley was forced out of the opening race after a collision with two-time Carrera Cup champion Tim Harvey. Fifth place for the Leicester driver in the second race salvaged some points on a weekend where he dropped to fourth in the championship.Hankey had a storming start to race one to move into second place, and then took the lead with seven laps remaining when Team Parker Racing’s Sam Tordoff made a crucial mistake.“That was a brilliant race,” he said. “I didn’t get a fantastic start, but they all went to the inside for the first corner and braked early – and I went around the outside. I got into the rhythm and was catching Sam ever so slightly. Then when he made his mistake I chilled out – we’re only allowed two sets of tyres per race weekend and I’d flat-spotted my other set in qualifying, so I knew I’d have to save these ones for race two. I backed off big time.”In the second race, Hankey belied his tyres’ age to take third, hard on the heels of the leading pair and actually slashing the gap in the closing stages: “I knew I couldn’t keep the pace on the tyres, and at one point I made a horrible mistake at the chicane and I was heading towards the wall. I was extremely lucky to get out of that one alive! Then the tyres came back in and I couldn’t believe my pace at the end. A big thanks to my team and my sponsor, Ecko Clothing.”Jelley was furious after his clash with Harvey: “He launched up the inside and I gave him room, but he hit me hard on the exit of the corner and damaged my right-rear wheel.” In the second race he headed Harvey home to take fifth. “It was the polar opposite to my first weekend at Brands,” he said.Team principal Stuart Parker added: “Euan’s done a fantastic job, and in many ways his performance in the second race was as impressive as his win – perhaps even more so – to bring it home on those tyres. It was tough for Stephen, and obviously things aren’t quite right so we’ll have a close look before the next round.”TORDOFF LEADS BUT DENIED MAIDEN WINOf Team Parker Racing’s two Yorkshire-based Carrera Cup rookies, Sam Tordoff showed extraordinary pace but was cruelly denied his maiden victory in the series, while Richard Plant scored strongly with a fourth and a seventh to move into an impressive fifth place in the championship.Tordoff put the cat among the pigeons by qualifying second for both races, and led the first race for 16 of the 23 laps before running off the road while passing a backmarker. He clambered back onto the circuit in 10th place and recovered to eighth by the finish, gaining a bonus point for fastest lap that also represents a new lap record.“We’ve got mega race pace and I led it comfortably,” he said. “A backmarker got in my way and I had to go wide to pass him. I got onto the loose rubber marbles, which ran me wide onto the grass, and then round she went. I’d made my best start ever and Euan and I were seven seconds ahead of the field. For me to do that so early in my Carrera Cup career is fantastic.”Tordoff was running a comfortable third in the second race when he exited with engine failure.Plant, who did not race at all in 2010 after winning the Formula Palmer Audi title in 2009, finished hard on the heels of championship leader James Sutton in race one to take a fine fourth place. “It was lucky bearing in mind the incidents that others had, but I’m happy with the result,” he said. “I’d like to get a podium obviously, but I’m sure that will come soon.” It was a strong comeback after qualifying, where Plant was unhappy that he could not put in a solid lap time to do himself justice due to traffic. In the second race, Plant sat right behind Jelley and Harvey to take a strong seventh place, keeping up his run of good finishes this season.Stuart Parker said: “Sam’s pace was amazing for someone in just his second Carrera Cup meeting. It’s very promising. Richard learned a lot again and he’s knocking on the door of a really good result.”PRO-AM1 RACERS IN FIGHT FOR PODIUMIt was a weekend of what-might-have-been for the two Dextra JD Pierce by Parker drivers in the pro-am1 class. Derek Pierce and Alex Martin were both in pro-am1 podium positions in both races, but events transpired to thwart them during an incident-packed weekend.West Country driver Martin was running right in the wheeltracks of Ahmad Al Harthy, who would go on to win the class, in the opening race, but then he made a mistake at the Old Hairpin and dropped down the order. Scotsman Pierce therefore moved up to third before he ran off the track at the same corner. As the two drivers recovered, Pierce did some strong overtaking and beat Martin to fifth in class – it was just Pierce’s second race weekend after a one-year layoff.Pierce was leading Martin for third in pro-am1 in the second race when Martin spun at McLeans. While chasing second-placed Al Harthy, Pierce went off line while passing the retiring Tordoff into the chicane and was forced into retirement.Martin, who came back to take sixth place, said: “We’re bang on the pace and I’ve got to stop making these mistakes. If ever I had the opportunity to win the class, the first race was it, but I dropped a wheel off and spun it. I’ve got to stop losing concentration – but if race-driving was easy it would be boring!”Team Parker Racing’s pro-am2 driver, John Taylor, continued to learn as he took sixth place in class in both races. “It was very enjoyable and I had a few good dices,” he said. “With the warm weather it gets very hot in the car, but I’m glad to complete the weekend with two finishes.”Stuart Parker said: “The pro-am1 drivers have both got good speed but they just have to keep it on the black stuff, and then they’ll get good results – as they proved first time out at Brands Hatch.”As part of the ultra-popular British Touring Car Championship package, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB enjoyed live coverage of its second race at Donington Park on ITV4 and ITV4 HD, and was streamed live at itv.com/touringcars. The series now moves on to Thruxton in Hampshire for the third round on the weekend of April 30/May 1.
