Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship team Manor Competition had a mixed outing at Thruxton Circuit over the weekend, 30th April/1st May, during the third event of the 2011 season - potential podium finishes for Alice Powell, Jordan King, Josh Hill and Ollie Millroy all going begging.Qualifying on Saturday provided the usual late-session battle as the drivers jostled for position and, in the first period, Jordan King produced easily his most competitive showing of the year with a superb second fastest time - just missing a maiden pole position by only 0.061 seconds.Team-mate Powell was half a second further back with the fifth fastest time, coming off the back of a maiden podium at Donington Park a fortnight ago, two places ahead of Ollie Millroy who shaded Hill for seventh on the round five grid.In the round six session, it was Powell's turn to step forward and place her car on the front row of the grid with the second best time - 0.3 seconds away from pole - while King was fifth fastest, Millroy sixth and Hill ninth. At the beginning of round five on Saturday afternoon, Graduate Cup star King looked set for the best run of his rookie season by far but contact from Tio Ellinas on the very first lap resulted in a costly spin and an eventual finish of 10th place. Bitterly disappointing for the Warwickshire teenager, he at least salvaged some championship points.Powell moved up well into the top three with Hill, having made a fantastic start, into fourth place and Millroy just behind in fifth. Hill looked particularly quick but the Farnham driver misjudged his braking at the chicane on lap five and unfortunately tagged the back of Powell's car, leading to the Formula Renault BARC Champion's retirement.Hill was able to continue in third but then had to pit for a new nose cone and front wing which meant he eventually finished in 11th position.Millroy therefore assumed third place and looked well on course to grab his first podium of the season but Oliver Rowland managed to sneak ahead during the final moments of the race following a slight mistake by the Manor man to demote him to fourth. More terrible luck for Powell in round six...Sunday's sixth round brought more desperate disappointment for the luckless Powell as she was shunted out of the race on the opening lap at the complex. Having got away cleanly from the front row of the grid, the Chipping Norton racer was under pressure but all looked good until contact into the right-hander ruled her out of the race instantly.King came through the ensuing chaos in third place with Hill up to fifth after a sensational opening lap from ninth on the grid, but for Millroy the delay at the complex didn't go in his favour and he slipped to ninth position.King piled on the pressure to second placed Rowland and after setting the fastest race lap on the third tour, he moved ahead through the complex on lap five with a fantastic pass. Holding second place up into the chicane at the end of lap, an unfortunate spin dropped him out of the reckoning and he had to settle for a recovery drive into 10th place at the finish.Hill then took up the mantle of Manor's podium charger and he reeled in Rowland, who had slipped behind Ellinas. Eating into his rival's advantage lap after lap, into the final third of the race Hill was within touching distance but just couldn't quite find a way by. Just 0.4 seconds split the pair during the closing laps but Rowland managed to hold on with Hill taking a, nonetheless impressive, fourth.Millroy's race also ended in frustration as his storm up the order stalled when lying in sixth as he just wasn't able to get by Mitchell Gilbert. Clearly the quicker of the two, the Claygate racer was heavily defended at every juncture and he had to settle for sixth at the flag, just 0.1 seconds shy of fifth. However, he was promoted to fifth post-race when Gilbert was penalised for jumping the chicane."It's been another frustrating weekend as all four drivers showed they had the pace to be right at the front but it just didn't happen for us", said Manor Competition's Sarah Shaw, "Jordan and Alice did a great job to take front-row starts in qualifying and all four were capable of podiums."We know the pace is there but the results just aren't following at the moment. The team is working really hard to turn that around, hopefully when the season resumes at Oulton Park next month we'll be able to do just that."Oulton Park Island Circuit in Cheshire will host the next two races of the 2011 Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship, rounds seven and eight, over the weekend 4th/5th June.Provisional 2011 Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship Driver Standings (after Rd6):3rd Ollie Millroy, 130pts; 5th Josh Hill, 98pts; 7th Jordan King, 82pts; 10th Alice Powell, 63ptsProvisional 2011 Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship Team Standings (after Rd6):3rd Manor Competition, 236pts
