Tough Oulton Park Weekend For Champions Hillspeed
Reigning Protyre Formula Renault BARC champions Hillspeed battled hard through an incredibly tough third event of the 2011 season at Oulton Park on Saturday, 28th May, during which Zaamin Jaffer and Howard Fuller traded places in the driver standings. Indian-born Jaffer, who is embarking on his first season of 'slicks and wings' action this year, ended rounds five and six of the campaign eighth in the championship chase after securing seventh and ninth place finishes in the two races. Fuller, also a full-season rookie in Formula Renault BARC, was caught-up in an incident during the opener which led to his second non-finish of the year but a good run to 10th in round six maintained a spot in the coveted championship top 10. In the main, the weekend's action was all about the emergence of red flag stoppages - three in total and two, in particular, costing Fuller dear after impressive starts to both encounters. Young team-mate Sean Walkinshaw, meanwhile, was very unfortunate to get caught out in a race two incident which was no fault of his own but he continued to show strong progress nonetheless. In addition to that, qualifying was perhaps the biggest issue facing Hillspeed with none of the Hathersage squad's racers able to deliver the sort of lap times expected. This left some monumental work for the trio to undertake during rounds five and six. Fuller and Jaffer were very evenly matched with the 14th and 15th best times for the race one grid while racing newcomer Walkinshaw was 21st out of 23 competitors. On the grid for race two, Jaffer was 14th, Fuller 16th and Walkinshaw again 21st. Round five was frustratingly red flagged after three laps due to an incident at the exit of Old Hall corner. Fuller had made phenomenal progress up to sixth position prior to that point, while Jaffer was also on the cusp of the top six before a spin for Spain's Victor Jiminez which led to the Indian receiving severe damage to his car's nose cone. The stoppage did allow Jaffer to get his car repaired and he raced strongly to a top seven finish but Fuller was involved in an incident along Lakeside which again brought out red flags and ruled him out of the result. Walkinshaw had a spin on lap two at Cascades but he recovered to finish 14th. In round six, both Fuller and Jaffer had to fight through the mid-pack but another race stoppage occurred four laps in. At the re-start Fuller held 13th ahead of Jaffer but the positions changed the next time around and remained in that order to the finish. Taking the flag in 10th and 11th respectively, Jaffer and Fuller were promoted to ninth and 10th post-race following the exclusion of erstwhile points leader James Thorp. Walkinshaw's race came to a very unfortunate conclusion after an incident at Druids, in which he was completely blameless. "We've had a difficult couple of days", said team principal Richard Ollerenshaw, "The races were never going to be easy from where we qualified. With first year drivers you do rely on them learning where to improve between qualifying sessions but this weekend we had just the one session and it proved tough. "Testing wasn't the best on Friday but the pace we showed then would have put us about sixth in qualifying if we'd been able to bring that same level of performance into Saturday. When you're down the order, it's always going to be difficult to race through." He added: "Sean did a decent job in qualifying and he made a good step in the right direction by going quicker than he has ever been before at Oulton. Unfortunately, in race two, he was caught out through no fault of his own in an accident that simply shouldn't have happened. All in all, a tough weekend which is quite disappointing at a track where we've enjoyed good success in the past." Hillspeed will return to Oulton Park just days from now for the resumption of the 2011 Ginetta Junior Championship with rounds seven and eight of the season taking place next weekend, 4th/5th June, as support to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. The team's Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship squad, meanwhile, has a lengthy eight week break from action with the second half of its season set to get underway on 23rd/24th July at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire. 2011 Provisional Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship Standings (after Rd6): 8th Zaamin Jaffer, 79pts; 10th Howard Fuller, 65pts; 23rd Sean Walkinshaw, 12pts
