Jaffer Climbs Into Top Eight At Incident-Packed Oulton

Zaamin Jaffer continued to rack up the points during the latest two rounds of Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship action at Oulton Park on Saturday, 28th May - the talented Indian racer having moved into eighth place in the driver standings as the season reaches mid-distance. Continuing to balance exams at Cardiff University with his racing career, the 21-year-old arrived at the Cheshire circuit aiming for some season-best results and although qualifying didn't go according to plan he did carve out two strong finishes - seventh in round five and ninth in round six. Having adapted well to the style of driving required to be quick in the 'slicks and wings' category, the Hillspeed rookie wasn't able to hook the laps together that he wanted in the 20-minute qualifying session and ended up disappointed with uncharacteristic 15th and 14th position grid slots. At the start of round five, Zaamin made tremendous early progress and on the first lap alone he made his way into the top eight with some quality racing. Running close to the tail of the top six, a spin for Spanish driver Victor Jiminez led to a broken nose cone and front wing for Zaamin but some good fortune did follow when the action was halted - giving him chance to obtain a repair. At the re-start, with his FR 2.0 car sporting a new nose, the Dubai-domiciled racer managed to rise into seventh place before the action was red-flagged again due to a multi-car tangle. This time, a result was declared with Zaamin equaling his best result of the season so far. "It was a bad qualifying again for us", he said, "Starting 15th on the grid for the first race, all I could do was make up as much ground as possible early on and I was up into eighth or so on the first lap but then Victor (Jiminez) spun in-front of me.  "He went right, so I went left, but then his car came back across and I lost the nose cone. Luckily, the race was red flagged anyway so I got a new nose on. I got away well at the re-start and moved up into seventh to score some good points so I was fairly happy with that in the end." For round six, the Active PR-backed driver didn't have the best of starts but, yet again, racing was halted due to contact between several cars. Seizing the opportunity to make amends for his tardy getaway from before, Zaamin gained four positions on the run to the first corner at the re-start and caught-up to erstwhile championship leader James Thorp. With Thorp running with a broken front-wing, due to an earlier clash with another competitor, he held up Zaamin significantly and this gave Hillspeed team-mate Howard Fuller a chance to close in and apply some pressure. Focused on holding on to his top 10 position, Zaamin saw off Fuller and post-race gained an additional place to ninth when Thorp was excluded from the results. "I didn't have a great start, I got too much wheelspin and lost some places but then we had another red flag of course", explained Zaamin, "At the re-start I made a much better getaway and jumped about three or four cars off the line straight away. I was catching James Thorp but he held me up a bit, Howard (Fuller) then caught us up and I lost time by defending him. "I love driving at Oulton Park so I am disappointed we couldn't achieve more from the weekend, we've had a few little problems but the main thing was qualifying - we need to have a big think over the summer break to get on top of that and be where we should be, in the top six at least."  With the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship now at its midway point, Zaamin has a substantial eight-week break from action with rounds seven and eight of the season set to take place at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire over the weekend 23rd/24th July. In the meantime, he will turn all of his attention once again to his crucial degree studies at Cardiff University. Provisional 2011 Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship Standings (after Rd6): 1st Josh Webster, 144pts; 8th Zaamin Jaffer, 79pts
