AutoGP, Onidi “In Budapest to keep momentum”

Fabio Onidi was one of the main players of the opening Auto GP weekend in Monza. He was unlucky in Race 1, when a pit-stop gremlin hampered his strategy, and then took revenge in Sunday’s Sprint Race leading the Auto GP pack from flag to flag. Thanks to this he grabbed 3rd place in the overall standings, just one point adrift from Filippi, and he arrives in Budapest on a high.“It’s true, I’m arriving in Budapest on a high, because Monza confirmed that we have the pace to challenge for the win: in Race 2 my start was really good and I could control the race with no worries at all, I believe it was a strong showing from my side. Furthermore, considering that my first race was ruined at the pit-stop, coming out from Monza in P3 overall is a really good way of limiting the damage. The team is working really hard and the car feels great, so I think I can have a shot at the title. Keeping momentum after the win in Monza must be my aim”.Who will be your fiercest rivals, considering what you’ve seen in Monza?“Everybody was impressed by Venturini, which is obvious with such a debut, but I believe that in the long run to the title Tambay will be the most dangerous rival: he’s quick, he’s always competitive and makes no mistakes, so I will have to keep a special eye on him. Filippi is potentially quicker but has ups and downs, and then I’m curious to see how the young guns like Buttarelli and Ceccon will cope with next races”.Those results from the rookies where one of the biggest surprises in Monza, what’s the reason in your opinion? “I remember that when I passed from F.Renault 2.0 to F3000 I was very quick myself. I believe that the reason can be found in the car: while it’s very quick and challenging, it’s always very clear in its reactions, it lets the driver understand its next move quite easily. So if you are talented and you have good car control you can be immediately quick, even if you’re very young”.Looking to Budapest, what do you expect from the Hungarian races?“I know the circuit because I raced there in 2007, but while I remember the first and the last part of the track quite well I have some more doubts on the central bit, something that will be gone with the first laps in the Friday Practice. It’s a very physical track, even more on the Auto GP car, and technical drivers can really make a difference there. Qualifying will be very important because there are no clear spots for overtaking, so I will give my best to start from the front row”.
