Crestani: “AutoGP Brno will be our turning point”

Fabrizio Crestani was undoubtedly among the drivers who showed the best performances in the two first Auto GP rounds of 2011. Always very quick in Practice and Qualifying, despite this he struggled to realize this huge potential in the races, also because of some race incidents. That’s why he’s a bit behind in the Championship standings, 43 points adrift from leader Venturini. Anyway, this is not enough to stop him from being positive about his chances for the rest of the season.“Obviously I’m not happy when I look at the standings, I’m not where I’d like to be, but on the other hand I know that performance has nothing to do with this scarce point tally. Race accidents took many points away from me, and without that I would be very close to the Championship lead. I know that now the gap seems huge, but it’s all down to the new points system. It’s very punishing when you are forced to retire from a race, but at the same time it can help you recovering quickly when the others are having problems. I had my part of bad luck already, now it could be somebody else’s turn”.The accidents you had were very different, but both took away from you a possible win. In Budapest in particular the contact wasn’t your fault at all, how does it feel losing so many points like that? “Well it hurts a lot. You know, in Hungary we had a very realistic aim, we just wanted to get the best that was possible considering that it was my debut on such a difficult track. That’s why our strategy was aimed to Race 2, and it was working flawlessly. I was passing Gonzalez and then I would have won the race easily, I had the pace to do that. Unfortunately Rodolfo decided to close the gap too late, when I was already on the inside with the whole car, and he touched my rear rim damaging it. I lost 18, points, and just for a mistake made by somebody else. Monza was different, I have some responsibility: they took me by surprise braking very early but being the one behind avoiding the contact was up to me”.As said, the performance is surely there, also thanks to the skills of your team. How do you get on with Lazarus?“We had a perfect relationship right from the first tests we did together: they are skilled people, very well organized, and this makes things easier during the race weekend. What amazes me is how we always start working in the right direction on track, then improving session after session. This means they know the car very well, and that’s vital to get good results, together with the great feeling I have with my engineer”.What do you expect from Brno?“I want Brno to be a turning point for my Championship, and to do that I need to realize all my potential. It looks good as I know the track and I like it, I raced there in F.Master in 2008 and I still remember it quite well. Furthermore, the team raced there last year with Onidi, so we have all the data and a very good benchmark to start with. From my side, I will try to do my best right from the first Free Practice, and in the races I will try to improve my starts. Getting off the line well you can easily avoid some of the problems I had in the first races”.
