Seventh Podium Of Season For Nasr At Brands Hatch
Brazilian motor racing star Felipe Nasr secured his seventh podium of the 2011 Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series with a great drive to second place during a rain-affected 10th round of the season at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit Saturday, 18th June.Earning yet another healthy haul of points, the 18-year-old maintains his position at the top of the championship standings thanks to a fantastically well judged drive - one which very nearly brought him his fourth win of the year.Heavy rain prior to the race meant everyone started on treaded wet-weather rubber but, ahead of the midway point of the 21-lap encounter, a dry line began to appear to deliver a fascinating conundrum for the drivers and teams as to whether or not they should pit for slick tyres.Balancing off the loss of time while in the pits against the potential gains of slicks on an ever-drying track, Felipe and his Carlin crew made the choice to fit dry-weather rubber and it almost paid off as he reeled in the leader who remained on wets.Scything his way through the order, the South American closed in dramatically and especially so during the final four laps. At the end of the penultimate tour the gap was down to less than nine seconds and at the chequered flag it was just 4.9 seconds - an outstanding effort. With one more lap, chances are the championship leader would have been the race winner too."It was quite a crazy race today but very exciting", said Felipe, "It was a great call by the engineers to pit when we did for the slicks and, with one more lap, maybe we could have had the win. The most important thing is that we scored some really good points again and that's what we want and need for the championship. I'm very happy with the result today - big thanks to the team."Felipe started the weekend perfectly with a dominant performance during pre-event testing on Friday, 17th June, where he was the only driver to lap below the 1m18 second barrier. His quickest time of 1m17.847 seconds (112.52mph) placed him a quarter of a second clear of his closest rival.During this morning's all-important qualifying session, he was third fastest but pushed to the end to try and secure pole position. On his final lap, Felipe unfortunately ran off the circuit at Stirlings Bend but the Carlin mechanics did a tremendous job to repair his Dallara-Volkswagen in time for the race."We had a big rush to get the car ready after the shunt in qualifying", added Felipe, "There was a lot of work to do, in a short space of time, but the team did an incredible job to get me out there for the race, so I have to say a very big thank you to them all."Round 11 of the 2011 Cooper Tires British F3 International Series will get underway at 10.35, Sunday, 19th June, with round 12 following at 14.10. Felipe will start the first race from ninth on the grid - the top 10 finishers from today's encounter being reversed to determine the starting order - while for the final outing of the weekend he will line-up in third position.Provisional 2011 Cooper Tires British F3 International Series Standings (after Rd10):1st Felipe Nasr, 129pts
