Robertson Stars In Croft Ginetta Junior Qualifying To Take Double Pole‏

Charlie Robertson produced a career-best qualifying performance at Croft in North Yorkshire , Saturday, 18th June, to secure pole position for the ninth and 10th rounds of the Ginetta Junior Championship – the 14-year-old starring with his maiden grid-topping effort.Surrey-based Robertson, the youngest competitor on the whole Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship package, posted a best lap of 1m39.491 seconds (76.89mph) to claim pole for the first race of the weekend by 0.113 seconds from Thruxton race winner George Gamble.Such was his consistency, the ultra-impressive car racing rookie delivered a second fastest time of 1m39.600 seconds to seal pole for the second Croft encounter – again from Gamble who was just over a 10th of a second shy once more. The session wasn’t without drama as, on the out-lap, Sennan Fielding came to a halt at the Jim Clark Esses after an unfortunate excursion caused by a problem with the air-jacks on his car not having retracted fully. After a reasonable delay, qualifying resumed over 12 minutes and the gap in track-running did give the circuit an opportunity to dry as earlier rainfall became less frequent. Jake Giddings, winner of the opening round of the season at Brands Hatch, initially set the pace ahead of Brad Bailey but with eight minutes of the session remaining, Robertson took the top spot by a massive 0.8 seconds.Giddings immediately hit back on his next lap before Gamble came to the fore but both were then bettered by William Foster, prior to Robertson moving to the top once again with four minutes of the session to go.With less than a 10th of a second splitting Robertson, Gamble and Giddings, the battle for pole looked to be between those three but Tom Howard wanted a piece of the action and he slotted into third on the times with just three minutes left on the clock.Robertson became the first driver to dip below the 1m40 second barrier with his best time of all – 1m39.491 seconds – and although getting close, nobody could better the HHC Motorsport driver at the team’s local track.“At the start it was raining quite heavily on the first lap and on cold tyres it was very slippery”, said Robertson, “After the red flag, when we came back out, the track was drier and there wasn’t as much rain falling so I let everyone else go so I could get some clear laps. We managed to get a couple of really fast ones in to stick the car on pole so I’m really happy.”Gamble’s pair of front-row starts puts him in a great position to challenge for his second victory of the year while third on the grid for both races for Bailey marks a season-best effort. Foster starts fourth for round nine ahead of Howard and Giddings while for round 10, Howard lines up on the second row ahead of Giddings and Foster. Some of the biggest news of the session came with the surprise 11th fastest time for dominant championship leader Seb Morris. For once, the multiple race winner wasn’t involved in the battle at the head of the timing screens after a decision to switch to wet-weather rubber midway through the session didn’t pay off. For round 10, he will start 14th on the grid and with plenty of work to do.Round nine of the 2011 Ginetta Junior Championship will get underway at 13.20 , Sunday, 19th June, with round 10 set to follow at 16.40. Both races will receive live television coverage on cable, digital satellite and Freeview channel ITV4 and on the ITV4 HD channel.
