Second Ginetta GT Supercup Win Of Season For Freke During Croft Opener‏

Former Ginetta G50 Cup Champion Nathan Freke took his second victory of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup season at Croft Circuit , Saturday, 18th June, with a faultless performance in tricky conditions during the 12th round of the season.Although beset with misfortune during the early part of the 2011 campaign, Freke is now beginning to show the sort of form which carried him to the G50 crown in 2009. Securing pole position for today’s race by 0.2 seconds from Adam Morgan, he went on to claim an emphatic lights-to-flag win by just over three seconds.Morgan, a consistent podium finisher season-long, delivered an assured drive to second place and was never realistically challenged as a titanic battle over third place raged. Involving as many as half a dozen drivers at one stage, Colin White emerged with his second podium of the year.Freke commented: “We knew we had good pace, I pushed hard early on but because this circuit is so hard on tyres I then chipped it back and made sure I was absolutely in-line everywhere, no sideways and no wheel-spinning! The times stayed very consistent and I could see I had a good gap. The car was fantastic, I couldn’t believe how far ahead we were – it was nice to be out front in control.”Championship leader Tom Sharp had a torrid time of things and, as such, has now seen his points lead shrink to just 19 over Carl Breeze – the latter finishing fourth this afternoon ahead of the ever impressive G50 Class leader Tom Ingram who secured yet another victory in fifth overall.Sharp’s problems began soon after qualifying concluded. Posting the third fastest time and looking to get back to winning ways, he was later penalised for a mix-up regarding a tyre change midway through the session. Mistakenly fitting a non-permitted set of tyres, all of his times after that point were disallowed meaning he would begin round 12 from 11th position overall. In the race itself, Sharp’s day went from bad to worse when he was shown the black flag due to his car having been deemed out of position at the start. Eventually pitting on lap 12 from third place, Sharp finished the race in 13th overall – seventh in the headline G55 class.Behind dominant race winner Freke and impressive runner-up Morgan, the fight for third place took everyone’s attention – not least as it involved championship debutant Tim Harvey, co-commentator for ITV’s Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship coverage, 1992 BTCC Champion and double Porsche Carrera Cup GB title winner.Holding third place at the start, Harvey – driving the car previously piloted by Joachim Ritter – lost out to a good pass by Stefan Hodgetts at Sunny In. Their battle intensified into lap three though when Harvey got a good run towards Clervaux but was squeezed towards the pit-wall.Slipping behind Breeze in the process, he regrouped and passed his team-mate on the brakes into Tower before setting off after Hodgetts again. Running close together, Harvey’s race came to an all-too-early end when he clipped the tyre-stack at the chicane – breaking the steering arm.“I was pleased to get away third off the start, it’s always tricky to get a different car off the line well”, commented Harvey, “To be fair, Stefan (Hodgetts) pulled a good move to get me at Sunny In. He then held us all up though and was anxious to hold on to the place – nearly putting me in the pitwall.“That allowed Carl to go back through but I regrouped and got back ahead, started pressuring Hodgetts but I got too close to him through the chicane, clipped the tyres and broke the steering arm. I’m cross with myself but the car felt good, the pace was very good and I thoroughly enjoyed racing the car. I can’t wait for the next two races tomorrow now to make amends!”With Harvey out of the equation, Breeze, Sharp and White were the main threats to Hodgetts’ third place and from lap 10 he progressively dropped back before retiring at the end of the penultimate lap. Sharp, of course, pitted because of his black flag on lap 12 which meant White assumed third ahead of Breeze.Ingram’s tremendous drive to fifth overall, battling tooth and nail with a number of quicker G55 cars, underlined his dominance thus-far of the G50 Class and boosted his championship lead to a superb 96 points.George Murrells rounded out the top six on track, just ahead of fellow G55 campaigner Alistair James by a mere 0.3 seconds at the line, with G50 runner Jake Hill next-up in eighth ahead of class rival Aaron Williamson.Speaking on his seventh win, Ingram said: “The car was fantastic today and it was a great race, Colin (White) and Carl (Breeze) were battling ahead and holding each other up and that gave me a chance to be right there with them at the end. It’s hard when you’re on the same pace as the G55s, you don’t want to get involved but you don’t want to be held up either so you have to be very careful.”Round 13 of the 2011 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup will get underway at 12.50, Sunday, 19th June, with round 14 following at around 16.00 – both encounters will be screened live across the UK on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channel ITV4, in High Definition on ITV4 HD and with additional streaming online at itv.com/touringcarsProvisional 2011 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup Championship Positions (after Rd12):1st Tom Sharp, 330pts; 2nd Carl Breeze, 311pts; 3rd Adam Morgan, 287pts; 4th George Murrells, 250pts; 5th Colin White, 208pts; 6th Nathan Freke, 204ptsProvisional 2011 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup ‘G50 Class’ Championship Positions (after Rd12):1st Tom Ingram, 365pts; 2nd Jody Fannin, 269pts; 3rd Jake Hill, 264pts; 4th Aaron Williamson, 231pts; 5th Robert Gaffney, 186pts; 6th Louise Richardson, 136pts
