Only 10 races in to his first season of car racing action, 14-year-old Charlie Robertson delivered a ground-breaking performance at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire , Sunday, 19th June, to seal his maiden Ginetta Junior Championship victory.Qualifying on pole position for both of the weekend's races, finishing second in round nine and also posting the fastest lap of the race - and new circuit record for the Ginetta G40s - Charlie eclipsed all of that in round 10 with a sensational performance to claim a memorable debut win.The Whyteleafe-based youngster, who is widely believed to be possibly the youngest ever winner of a car race in the UK, is now up to third in the championship at the halfway point of the season after his best and most successful weekend so far in Ginetta Junior."This has been my ultimate goal as the year has gone on", said the HHC Motorsport racer, "We've been building up to it, we've had a few second places, but now we've taken the first win so I'm really happy. The car has been really, really good all weekend so a big thank you to the team for that."Charlie's weekend started with a comfortable top five performance during pre-event testing on Friday, 17th June, before he really came to the fore on Saturday, 18th June, by dominating the wet free practice session almost 0.7 seconds clear of his nearest rival. In qualifying, the Caterham School pupil consolidated his front-running pace with a superb effort to claim a maiden pole position for both races - his quickest lap of 1m39.491 seconds (76.89mph) netted the top spot on the grid for round nine by 0.113 seconds while his second best time of 1m39.600 seconds did the same for round 10.Race one took place on a drying track and at the start Charlie had to settle for second into the first corner, managing to hold on well to his car after contact from Brad Bailey who attempted to sneak up the inside. The delay for Charlie afforded race leader George Gamble a 1.6 second cushion but the Surrey teenager closed down his advantage markedly by the start of lap four.Seeing off a challenge from championship leader Seb Morris for second place, Charlie once again set off after Gamble and posted a series of fastest laps - the quickest of 1m39.204 seconds (77.11mph) on the seventh tour giving him the new Croft lap record.
Into the eighth and final lap, Charlie threw everything he could into taking the lead from Gamble and with a sensational move at the Jim Clark Esses he emerged ahead. Into the next turn though, Barcroft, an unfortunate spin while pushing to the limit enabled Gamble to go back through so the HHC racer had to settle for second place.
Determined to make his first visit to the top step of the podium, Charlie made a good start to round 10 but had to tuck in to second through Clervaux behind Tom Howard. Pressuring the leader over the first four laps, on the fifth tour at Tower Bend he made his move with a great pass on the brakes. From that point on, Charlie controlled the race at the front and eventually won by 1.5 seconds."I didn't think Tom (Howard) would be there at the start, I thought I had the lead into the first corner and then I saw he was there coming round the outside", explained Charlie, "I decided to just tuck in behind him and try and catch him throughout the race which we did, it all worked out perfectly."Charlie now has a long seven-week break from competition with the second half of the 2011 Ginetta Junior Championship season getting underway at Snetterton in Norfolk on 6th/7th August.Provisional 2011 Ginetta Junior Championship Driver Standings (after Rd10):1st Seb Morris, 318pts; 2nd George Gamble, 230pts; 3rd Charlie Robertson, 211pts
