Sam Brabham delivered his best Formula Kart Stars race result to date at Glan Y Gors on June 18&19, clearly demonstrating his constantly improving form in rounds five and six of the premier national karting series.
The 16 year-old from Henley-on-Thames was fully focused for his third Formula Kart Stars outing fresh from finishing his GCSE exams. Progressing in each of his race weekends this year, Sam further proved his potential in the demanding Junior Max class in Wales as he approaches the halfway point in his first national karting season.
After qualifying 22nd for round five, Sam relished the changeable weather conditions to record his highest Formula Kart Stars race result of the season so far with 13th in Heat two and he carried his form through to Saturday’s final to finish 17th.
A challenging round six on Sunday saw Sam qualify 21st and then confidently work his way up to 13th in heat one before he was knocked and consequently dropped back to 19th place. More misfortune in the second heat came by way of an opening lap incident, but Sam bounced back to set his fastest time around the challenging Welsh track.
Although the round six final race result didn’t rightly reflect his improvement throughout the double-header race weekend, Sam showed he’s in contention by stopping the timing clocks just two tenths of a second shy of the leader’s fastest lap time.
Sam commented: “I’ve made a big step forward this weekend and that’s shown in some of my race results. It was great to finish 13th in Saturday’s second heat and I hope it now won’t be long before I am chasing the top ten.
“Although not everything went my way this weekend, I am coping well with the challenges that come my way. My race craft is improving with every race weekend and now my exams are over I hope to do a bit more testing and concentrate on my qualifying performance before I tackle my first international race at Genk, in Belgium, in August.
