Challenging Croft Ginetta junior Weekend Turns Out Well For Hillspeed

Hillspeed drivers Seb Morris and Struan Moore each delivered a pair of impressively strong race performances at Croft in North Yorkshire over the weekend, 18th/19th June, during the ninth and 10th rounds of the 2011 Ginetta Junior Championship. Clear points leader Morris, winner of seven of the eight races contested prior to the visit to the North East, had to produce two determined drives from lower than expected grid slots. Although missing out on a podium for the first time this year, the 15-year-old underlined his determination and sparkling racecraft with fourth and fifth place finishes. Consolidating his tremendous lead at the head of the driver standings, Morris heads into the long seven week summer break for the Ginetta Junior Championship a massive 88 points ahead of his closest challenger.  Rookie team-mate Moore, who had never even seen the 2.12-mile Croft-on-Tees track prior to Saturday morning's short free practice session delivered by far the most impressive performance of his debut season. Eighth place in round nine, which matched his previous best finish from Thruxton earlier in the year, was bettered with a fantastic top seven placing in round 10 - the 16-year-old from Jersey showing the sort of pace and promise which should make him a consistent front-runner in 2012. Commenting on the weekend's action Richard Ollerenshaw, team principal of Hathersage-based Hillspeed, said: "Qualifying didn't go at all well for Seb but he most certainly redeemed himself in both races, he drove very well and without some questionable driving from some of the others I'm sure he'd have been able to achieve a couple of podiums. "Not only can we win from pole and lead from the front, Seb showed we can race our way through cleanly as well. Struan has massively impressed us this weekend, he did an absolutely outstanding job and especially when you bear in mind he'd never seen Croft before. With no testing, he went straight into the weekend and did an exceptional job, doubling his points tally - fantastic!" Morris endured an incredibly difficult qualifying session, a dramatic turn-around in fortunes seeing the runaway points leader rue his choice to pit for wet-weather tyres during the mid-point of the session. Despite some drizzle and damp patches on the track, the conditions improved rather than worsened and so he just had to do the best he could in the circumstances. In the end, he had just one flying lap in which to try and gain a reasonable grid slot for the first race, round nine, which he did with the 11th fastest time. His second best lap of the session though was only good enough for 14th on the round 10 grid. Moore, who had to miss the second of the Oulton Park races two weeks ago due to an essential school exam back home in Jersey, was also unable to take part in the pre-event test at Croft on Friday, 17th June, for the same reason but he did a good job in qualifying to secure a seventh row grid start for both races. In the first encounter, Morris produced a sensational opening lap to unbelievably climb into the top three from 11th on the grid and was well in the fight to achieve a podium which, after qualifying, seemed unthinkable. Challenging for second place at mid-distance, Morris then had to focus on maintaining third while under pressure from William Foster. Slipping to fourth on the last lap at the first corner, Seb was determined to retake the position and as he went around the outside of Foster at Tower Bend the Hillspeed teenager was edged wide onto the grass and had to settle for fourth at the finish. Moore, meanwhile, quickly moved up into the top 10 and by lap five he'd climbed into eighth position. Racing very strongly and delivering impressive lap times, Moore ended the race a mere 0.068 seconds shy of seventh placed Jake Giddings at the finish. In round 10, Morris' progress was impeded by the aforementioned Giddings on lap two while battling over fifth position. Contact at the complex pitched Seb off the track and into a spin but he did manage to recover and sliced his way back through into fifth place. He also posted the fastest lap of the race to gain a bonus point. Again, Moore impressed with a mature and assured drive running in among a six car train covering fifth to 10th place. Fighting hard to record a career best finish, the Channel Islander almost made it a top six result - missing out by just 0.2 seconds at the flag. There are now seven long weeks to wait until the next installment of Ginetta Junior Championship action over the weekend 6th/7th August at Snetterton in Norfolk. Before then though, Hillspeed's Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship squad will return to the track with the seventh and eighth rounds of the 2011 season scheduled to take place at Croft on 23rd/24th July. Provisional 2011 Ginetta Junior Championship Standings (after Rd10): 1st Seb Morris, 318pts; 16th Struan Moore, 59pts
