Brands Hatch podium for Buller

William Buller enjoyed another trip to the Cooper Tires British F3 International Series podium on a challenging weekend of racing on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.MSA Team UK backed driver Will, originally from Scarva but now based in Northamptonshire, arrived at the famous Kent circuit eager to add to the two podium finishes he has taken already this season.Qualifying saw Will post the sixth quickest time at the wheel of his Fortec Motorsport Dallara Mercedes, with his second quickest lap being good enough for fourth on the grid for the opening race of the weekend.Rain ahead of the opening race meant the field lined up on wet tyres for the start, but a poor get-away saw Will drop down the order. As the circuit started to dry out, he was one of the first drivers to gamble on swapping to slick tyres and then fought his way up to seventh place at the finish; being promoted one place higher into sixth thanks to a penalty for Kevin Magnussen. From fifth on the grid for race two, Will was hopeful of challenging for victory in the ‘sprint’ race but was tipped into a spin by Jazeman Jaafar at Graham Hill Bend on the opening lap. That saw him drop well down the order and with overtaking being far from straightforward around the Brands GP layout, Will focused on securing the bonus points on offer for fastest lap – which he claimed after setting a lap eight tenths of a second quicker than anyone else.Rain returned for the final race of the weekend with Will and the Fortec team electing to go with a set-up that was best suited to a drying circuit. However, unlike the previous day, the circuit failed to dry after a torrential downpour hit the race. Keeping his car on the road while others spun off, Will battled up to third place to claim a podium finish that has helped him move up to fifth in the championship standings.“We had strong pace all weekend and I’m happy with how things went, although there is a part of me that thinks we could have done better,” he said. “In qualifying, I struggled a bit to get a clear lap and it meant I maybe wasn’t as high up the grid as I could have been.“In the opening race, I made a bad start and lost places but it was a good call to pit when we did for slicks. I love those slippery conditions and I was the quickest man out there at the finish, but there wasn’t enough laps for me to climb higher.“It was disappointing not to see Jaafar given a penalty for the contact in race two as it ruined my race. It’s so hard to overtake at Brands Hatch and with the sprint race being so short, it would have been hard to get into the points so I focused on getting some clear space to go for fastest lap and the bonus points, which I managed to get.“For the final race, we thought it was going to dry up and we’d have been able to pit for slicks again, so we went with a set-up that was based on the circuit being dry by the finish. As it was, there was a huge downpour which didn’t help me but I managed to make up places, although I did lose some time when I had to avoid two cars going off in front of me. Towards the end, I saw Lucas [Foresti] make a mistake but I just couldn’t get through.“However, third was a good way to end the weekend and I’m up to fifth in the championship ahead of the races in Europe on circuits that are better suited to my driving style and where I should be strong.”As well as moving up the British F3 standings, Will’s performance at Brands Hatch also saw him move up the Sunoco Daytona Challenge standings, the initiative open to drivers in a range of series’ that offers a prize of a drive in the Rolex 24 at Daytona Grand-Am event with a top Daytona Prototype team worth $250,000.
