Brett Castle drifts to double win

The Sumo Power NISMO Competition.com Drift team scored an impressive double-victory at Brands Hatch last weekend, when Brett Castle took its Nissan S15 to glory in rounds three and four of the Pirelli European Drift Championship. It was an historic result too, as this was the Championship’s first ever double-header meeting, with one round held on Saturday and another on Sunday.

So far this year, Brett has not been able to show the car’s full potential, as a few teething troubles crept in at the beginning of the season, even though he was able to score an excellent second place finish in round two at Knockhill. So, with the Nissan running 100% and BC raring to go, success at Brands Hatch was firmly in the team’s sights this time round.

Saturday morning saw a wet start which, as strange as it sounds, is not good for Drifting, as drivers have to be able to feel how much grip they have right through the course if they want to execute a perfect series of drifts. However, with temperatures rising, the track very soon dried out and Brett showed who was in charge.

Saturday’s final saw him up against Tim Marshal in his Nissan 350Z. However, an engine problem in Tim’s car meant that a well-deserved round three victory went to Brett and the Sumo Power NISMO Competition.com Nissan.

Everyone who went to Brands Hatch on Sunday will be well aware that it was the hottest day of the year so far and, in contrast to that of the previous morning, the grip levels were immense. This meant that drivers had to use all the power that was available to them in order to initiate the drifts.

Again, there was no stopping our man Castle, who won all of his heats and went on to contest his second final of the weekend. This time he was up against Vince Noot in his Kleers-sponsored Nissan PS13 and, after the two runs there was nothing in it. So much so, the judges called an OMT (one more time).

Again, it was level-pegging after the first OMT run, but in the second Brett had the edge and bagged another Pirelli EDC victory to go with his first. All-in-all, not a bad weekend’s work.

At the finish a delighted Brett said: “It’s great to come away from this weekend having won both rounds. I knew the car had great potential and, when everything is working perfectly, these are the results that can be achieved. I therefore have to thank the team at Sumo Power for giving me such a great car for the job this weekend.”
