Kvyat on course in Hungarian Eurocup testing

Formula Renault 2.0 - Hungaroring - Collective testingAfter winning at the Nürburgring, Daniil Kvyat (Koiranen Motorsport) continued his recent run of form by setting the fastest time in collective testing in Hungary. The Russian finished at the front of the second group, ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne (KTR) and Will Stevens (Fortec Motorsport). In the first group, the fastest time was set by Oscar Andrés Tunjo (Josef Kaufmann Racing), followed by Timmy Hansen (Interwetten.com Junior Team) and Mathieu Jaminet (Josef Kaufmann Racing).Because the drivers in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 category and those in the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS category are mixed together during collective testing, the organisers decided to split the 48 drivers into two groups. In this mid-season race, three Formula Renault UK drivers made their debut in the category: the Australian Mitchell Gilbert (Fortec Motorsport) and the British pair Alex Lynn (Fortec Motorsport) and Jack Hawksworth (KTR). The event also saw the return of Florian le Roux (Epic Racing). When the drivers in group 1 left the pit lane, the Hungaroring circuit was still slightly damp, so it was a while before there were any significant times. Javier Tarancon (Tech 1 Racing) took control of the session and improved his performance lap by lap. He was the fastest man for most of the session, until Carlos Sainz Jr. (Koiranen Motorsport) joined the track. The Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championship leader quickly recorded the fastest time, with a 1:45.752. The Spaniard was still the leader at the end of the session, ahead of Timmy Hansen and Joni Wiman (Koiranen Motorsport). The second group was quicker from the outset. It was not long before Stoffel Vandoorne, Robin Frijns (Josef Kaufmann Racing), Daniil Kvyat, Paul Loup Chatin (Tech 1 Racing) and Alex Riberas (Epic Racing) all improved upon the time set by Carlos Sainz Jr. The Belgian Vandoorne went quickest, with a 1:45.225. After a brief interruption following Henrique Martins' (Cram Competition) escapade off the track, the pace increased further. Just before the chequered flag, Robin Frijns set the fastest lap of the morning (1:44.916), finishing at the front of group 2 ahead of Vandoorne and Kvyat. The track was damp again at the start of the afternoon and the drivers in group 1 had to wait before they could enjoy good grip. Pieter Schothorst (R-Ace Grand Prix) was the first to get close to the times set in the morning. Right at the end of the session, Oscar Andrés Tunjo shook up the established order, producing the fastest lap (1:43.918) ahead of Timmy Hansen and Mathieu Jaminet.Once again, the second group had the better track conditions. Vandoorne led for most of the session, but as the chequered flag approached, Alex Riberas (Epic Racing) dislodged the Belgian from the leading position. However, the first to improve on the time set by Oscar Andrés Tunjo was Daniil Kvyatt, who produced the best performance of the day to finish ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne and Will Stevens.Drivers' comments:

Mitchell Gilbert: "It's great to battle with the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 drivers. The field is so talented, so you really have to dig deep to produce a time. This weekend was a learning experience, and maybe I'll do some other rounds this season."

Jack Hawksworth: "I compete in Formula Renault UK and the season's going well so far as I am 4th. This weekend, I'm discovering a new team and a new circuit. It's interesting. It's a chance to check things out. My priority this season is still Formula Renault UK, but who knows what the future will bring!"
