Speedway News and Fixtures

(SPEEDWAY 1)BERWICK’S Swedish youngster Alex Edberg received multiple injuries in a horror crash at Shielfield Park on Saturday – but the news early the following morning was more encouraging.Edberg was rushed to hospital with concern over head and chest injuries after careering through the turn four fence at high speed in Heat 8 of the Bandits’ clash with Rye House.By 1am he was awake and talking to doctors, and had full memory of what had occurred, and further tests will determine the extent of his injuries although he has full movement of arms and legs.Berwick won a curtailed fixture 40-38, and boss Ian Rae said: “Thankfully we took the lead just when it mattered, but despite all of that all we are thinking about is Alex who we all send the very best of good wishes to and we’re willing him to make a speedy recovery. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters.”(SPEEDWAY 2)WORKINGTON maintained their 100 per cent home record with a 51-42 home win over Newcastle - but only after a mid-match scare. The Comets’ early ten-point lead was wiped out by a strong Diamonds response which put them ahead after Heat 10, and both sides saw riders withdrawn, Rusty Harrison (illness) for the home side and Stuart Robson (shoulder) for the visitors.Kyle Newman clocked up an impressive 17 (paid 18) for Newcastle, but Workington finished strongly and two 5-1s in Heats 11 and 12 turned the match back in their favour.Comets boss Tony Jackson said: “We were genuinely worried that it was going to be one of those nights when we trailed by a point with five heats remaining but the boys dug deep to carve out what could prove to be a crucial victory come the end of the season. Richard Lawson deserves a special mention, top-scoring with 16 points, including victories in his first five outings, he was our match winner tonight.”(SPEEDWAY 3)SCUNTHORPE claimed their second away win of the season with an impressive display at Newport on Saturday. The Scorpions put in an all-round team effort at Queensway Meadows with every rider being paid for at least five points, with reserve Thomas Jorgensen scoring 13 and recent signing Michael Palm Toft again showing up well.Jorgensen said: “Tonight was really nice and a really good team performance. Every rider on the team scored well and I think the key was making good starts tonight because of the track conditions.“Michael joining the team is really awesome and he is doing really well. He had a good debut last night (Friday) and has scored good points tonight.”

(SPEEDWAY 4)DANNY Warwick has re-joined the Isle of Wight and will make his first appearance of the season in their National League clash at home to Dudley on Tuesday.Warwick, the club’s rider of the year in 2010, was left without a team place at the start of the season, and he now comes in for the Islanders alongside grasstrack star Charlie Saunders, following the release of Brendan Johnson and Lee Smethills.Co-promoter Chris Hunt said: “We have now re-declared our side, and it's good to be able to fit Danny back into the side and welcome him back to the Island. “We had no choice in making changes. It was a very hard decision to make but it had to be done now that new averages have been issued which allowed the changes to take place. Nobody wants to drop anybody but we just have to get on with it, and we all wish Lee and Brendan all the best for the future.”(FIXTURES)
