Championship leader Nasr takes 5th win of 2011
Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series points leader Felipe Nasr took his fifth victory of the 2011 season at Germany’s Nurburgring this afternoon, Sunday, 3rd July, to move a substantial 75 points clear in the chase for the title as the championship reaches its halfway stage.Starting the second of the day’s two races third on the grid, the Brazilian 18-year-old made a great getaway to immediately move into second position and quickly set about pressuring pole-sitter Kevin Magnussen by setting the early pace.Into lap three, Felipe was within 0.4 seconds of the leader but the gap then fluctuated before the South American star hit back with the fastest lap on the seventh tour to close back to within just a second of his Carlin team-mate. The gap closed yet further the next time around but the race was neutralised on lap nine when the Safety Car was deployed. At the re-start on lap 11, Felipe crossed the start/finish line just 0.4 seconds behind Magnussen and the pair rapidly pulled well clear of the pack. As the race entered its final third, the order looked set but drama came on lap 18 when the leader slowed with an engine problem. Felipe needed no second invitation and swept past before cruising to a seven second winning margin, setting his personal best lap of 1m56.120 seconds (151.54 km/h) on the penultimate tour to underline his consistently strong pace. Notching up win number five, the result also gave the Brasilia native his 10th podium from 15 race starts this season – a remarkable tally.“I’m very happy with this result, I was in the right place at the right time”, he commented, “It’s like a payback from Snetterton really, I was very unlucky there but this time we have had some luck go our way. The car was strong all weekend, the team did a fantastic job as always. We knew Kevin would be very strong here as it’s a track he knows well so a win and another podium is great for us.”For this morning’s 14th round, Felipe lined-up his Dallara-Volkswagen seventh on the ‘reverse’ grid and held position during lap one before moving into the top four following a two-lap Safety Car period. He then spent the remainder of the race challenging for yet another podium but, in the end, just missed out by a mere 0.4 seconds.Pulling well clear of fellow Carlin runner Jazeman Jaafar, finishing almost three seconds to the good over the Malaysian driver, Felipe piled on the pressure to third placed Pedro Nunes but had to settle for a nonetheless impressively strong fourth place. Felipe added: “The whole weekend has been very good for the championship for us, we scored a lot of points and increased our lead. Until now I’ve been racing without taking risks, concentrating on making no mistakes, and it all seems to have worked well so far. “I’m looking forward to the next rounds at Paul Ricard, I don’t know the track yet so I’ll need to learn it quickly during the two practice sessions and set the car up as well as we can. It should be a similar style of racing to Monza, there should be lots of overtakes on the long straight – it’ll be fun!”Paul Ricard HTTT, at Le Castellet in France, will host rounds 16, 17 and 18 of the British F3 season a fortnight from now over the weekend 16th/17th July.Provisional 2011 Cooper Tires British F3 International Series Standings (after Rd15):1st Felipe Nasr, 196pts
