Maiden Porsche Supercup Weekend Starts Positively For Ahmad Al Harthy

Ahmad Al Harthy declared himself very happy indeed with his performance at Silverstone on Saturday, 9th July, during the qualifying session for the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup's British Grand Prix support race - the Omani's maiden outing in the world's premier Porsche championship.Breaking new ground once again for the Oman Air Racing Team this weekend by competing as part of an FIA Formula One World Championship event for the first time, the 29-year-old posted the 21st fastest time to qualify ahead of several Supercup regulars. Not only is the weekend the Muscat racer's first in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup it's also, somewhat surprisingly, his first ever experience of Silverstone's full Grand Prix Circuit - pre or post the recent reconfiguration of the track - despite the fact he has competed in the UK since 2007.Taking that into account, and also the fact Friday's practice session was affected by rain, Ahmad was still able to get rapidly up to speed during qualifying in his Oman Air, Nawras, National Bank of Oman, Brand Oman, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs and Oman Ministry of Tourism-backed car.Although knowing there is more time to find around the 5.8-kilometre track during Sunday's 14-lap encounter, Ahmad is confident of a strong race performance on his Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup debut as one of seven guest entries for the weekend from the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship."I'm very happy indeed with our performance so far, this is such a completely different level to any other Porsche Carrera championship in the world", said Ahmad, "Supercup is the pinnacle so I'm pleased with what we managed to do in qualifying. The whole point of this weekend is to continue my learning in Porsche and there's no better place to do that than against the very best drivers."I'm delighted to be part of a Formula One weekend with the Oman Air Racing Team, it's a privilege to be here at Silverstone for this event. Not only is it my first time in Supercup, I've never driven the Grand Prix track before so we know we can make some big improvements on Sunday as we continue to learn more and more. Our aim now is to have a solid race and to keep improving!"Ahmad's first ever race in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will get underway at approximately 10.45 (local time) on Sunday, 10th July, with live coverage to be screened throughout the UK, Europe and other territories via digital satellite and cable broadcaster Eurosport.
