(SPEEDWAY 1)RONNIE Russell has stood down as Swindon team manager with immediate effect and will be replaced by Jan Staechmann. The former Danish national boss will take charge of the Robins following the World Cup break, with Russell to focus on his track preparation duties at the Abbey Stadium.Swindon co-owner Gary Patchett said: “Ronnie has stood down by mutual consent. This will allow him to fully focus on the preparation of the track and relaying the top bend which has been badly affected by the ingress of sand from the dog track.“Jan was the only candidate considered for the position and is very enthusiastic about the role. As a former rider he will be able to relate to the riders from that perspective.”(SPEEDWAY 2)GLASGOW have taken over at the top of the Premier League after a comfortable 56-39 win over title rivals Somerset.Returning skipper Joe Screen scored a 12-point maximum for the Tigers, whose reserves Michal Rajkowski and Nick Morris piled up 26 (paid 29) between them – and co-promoter Stewart Dickson says it was a significant result. He said: “I suspect this was our toughest home fixture to date and to be able to overcome them by a comfortable margin bodes well for the rest of our fixtures. “It is great to hit the top of the table but we are well aware that we are not even at the halfway stage so there is a long way to go and nobody here is taking anything for granted.”(SPEEDWAY 3)HACKNEY made it maximum points for the weekend with a 50-40 win at Buxton to take them top of the National League table.In-form Barrie Evans dropped just one point from six rides as the Hawks overcame the absence of Shane Hazelden due to injury and David Mason for family reasons to take their first away win of the season.Joint-boss John Sampford said: “There were a few tense nerves, at 38-34, when Barrie and Paul (Starke), who was a great guest, were off the unfavoured gates in Heat 13. But they totally controlled the start of the race and led all the way.“As we said at the start of the season, this is a team that will improve as the campaign progresses. We’ve turned the corner in the last week or so. Now it’s a question of building for the run-in to the play-offs.”
