Spa podium maintains Bridgmans British GT momentum
British GT, Round 4: Spa-Francorchamps Tim Bridgman returned to the Avon Tyres British GT Championship rostrum at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend after an epic opening stint helped he and Trackspeed Racing claim second place in race two. Following his masterclass in changeable weather conditions last month which helped the #2 Porsche he shares with Gregor Fisken claim its maiden victory of 2011, the 26-year-old was again in fine form this time at the historic Belgian Grand Prix venue. Saturday's second race showcased Bridgman's ability to carve through traffic as he hauled the Porsche up from 12th on the grid to run third by the time he, along with the leaders, pitted. Fisken was just as determined to continue the charge as he first reclaimed third and then moved into second with five laps remaining. Despite an imposing seven-second deficit, the Scot ended up just 0.888 seconds shy of the winning Ferrari at the chequered flag. Bridgman had looked just as impressive earlier in the day before fading tyres late in race one extinguished any hopes of another podium. This time it was Fisken's turn to make the early running, handing the car over third after lining up sixth. Taking the wrong direction in qualifying set-up would come back to bite the team in the latter stages though as badly worn tyres saw Bridgman struggle to keep the car in contention. That he was able to cross the line seventh after struggling for much of his stint, let alone finish the race at all, was testament to his ability behind the wheel. Tim Bridgman: "We arrived at Spa aiming for a solid points haul so to leave there having nearly won is a great achievement. Full credit to the Trackspeed guys for giving us a great package even if we collectively made an error in qualifying. The car was so difficult to drive on the worn tyres which is why it was better to score some points and bring the car home unscathed than fight too hard. "Traffic on my qualifying run meant I started out of position in the second race. We knew the car had great pace though and I was delighted to really get stuck in against a strong pro driver line-up for the first time this year. Gregor continued the good work after that to close down the Ferrari and with one more lap he might have got him. It's the sort of result that proves we've turned our season around. Hopefully there's more to come at Rockingham."Gregor Fisken: "I'm delighted with how this weekend turned out because Spa isn't a circuit that plays to the Porsche's strengths. With so many championships on track at the same time traffic was always going to be a factor and I think we managed that particularly well. In race two I enjoyed a great scrap with Andrew (Howard) and then Duncan (Cameron). The gap was yo-yoing as we each cleared backmarkers so to get within a second is very encouraging. "We've learned from our mistake in qualifying and won't be going down that set-up route again. I can't speak highly enough of Tim who somehow got the car to the finish of race one on tyres which were practically down to the canvas. Without the problems a podium looked likely but in the circumstances seventh feels like a miracle!" Keith Cheetham, Team Manager: "It's been a good weekend even if on paper it looks like a mixed bag. Ferrari are usually fast here which is why we went so aggressive in qualifying. On raw pace though the Porsche was good which was down to the drivers as much as anything else. Gregor drove well all weekend and was really close to nicking race two at the end, while Tim worked wonders to bring the car home at all in race one." Their solid Spa points haul has helped the duo climb to fifth in the British GT standings with four races remaining. Rockingham hosts the first and second of those on September 3/4. .
