Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 on the podium again in debut Australian GT season
Peter Hackett has continued the impressive Australian GT Championship debut of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 by qualifying third and gaining two second place finishes in each of the series' 24 lap races held in Townsville over the weekend.Continuing his podium form displayed during the Australian debut of the stunning chrome liveried SLS AMG GT3 at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway in May, Hackett was in superb form at this popular event. In Saturday's opening 24 lap race, Hackett lost a position to 4th after the rolling start but it wasn't long before the SLS AMG GT3 driver made his way back into third by the 7th lap. He then muscled his way past Mark Eddy's Audi R8 to take second position, starting a fast paced chase to catch runaway race leader Klark Quinn in his Mosler MT900. Hackett reduced a seven second deficit to Quinn to 1.3 seconds by the chequered flag, clearly making the most of the impressive pace and balance of the SLS AMG GT3.Sunday's race saw Hackett set off on a speedy start, chasing race leading Lamborghini driver Kevin Weeks with Klark Quinn second. The trio set a five second gap to the remainder of the field by the 5th lap, the gap between Quinn and Hackett's Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 a mere 6/10ths of a second through to lap 15 when Hackett made his way past into second position. The gap by this stage to race leader Weeks was 8.5 seconds and he went on to an unchallenged win. Hackett finished the race in second place ahead of Quinn's Mosler. These double second place results secured Hackett second overall for the Townsville round, missing out on the round victory by a single point from Klark Quinn with Kevin Weeks third."We came close to winning an Australian GT Championship round in only our second race event with the SLS. It is a great race car and with every event we are understanding it better and learning how to get the most from it. The reaction from the fans this weekend with the car has been fantastic and it is great to bring this car to our Champioship and be competitive straight away. I am looking forward to the rest of the season as I am sure that the SLS will be even better suited to the fast and flowing race circuits," Hackett said.Hackett finished 5th in the 2010 Australian GT Championship driving a Lamborghini Gallardo. Along with competing in the 2011 Australian GT Championship, he is also the Chief Driving Instructor for Mercedes-Benz Australia and South East Asia, running their many and varied driver tuition and advanced driving programs across the Pacific region. Hackett is competing in the 2011 Australian GT Series with the only Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in the Southern Hemisphere. This is one of less than 30 hand built customer racing cars manufactured in one of the world's most advanced motor racing engineering facilities. Testament to the design prowess of performance engineering company AMG and motorsport partners HWA in Germany, this car has proven to be an instant front runner in the competitive Australian GT Championship on debut. Hackett returns to the track for Round 5 of the VodkaOAustralian GT Championship at Victoria's Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit from September 2-4.
