Sumpter Tops the Points as Porsche Club Racers Head to Rockingham

The Porsche Club Championship returns to the Rockingham circuit this weekend, Saturday July 19th, for its first visit in several seasons, and if the quality of racing matches that seen in almost every race so far this season, then the action at the front will be close and exciting.  Mark Sumpter has headed the points in the 2011 Porsche Club Championship since the very first race, his Paragon Porsche winning the opening four rounds and never off the podium in the following events.

Despite being in the oldest car in the field Sumpter has continued to rack up the points, though his rivals have been snatching the wins in recent races.

With Sumpter’s 911 taking pairs of wins at Brands Hatch and Croft, it was the 968 of Pete Morris that broke his run at Donington, and team-mate Andy Purdie denied Sumpter the win in the second race at the East Midlands venue. At Thruxton in June it was two first-time winners, Miles Maserati winning Saturday’s race, and Richard Lambert fought race long with Sumpter in Sunday’s rain lashed race to claim the win.

Second in the Class One points table to Sumpter is Ben Demetriou, who has been consistently quick in his new 968, ahead of Morris and Demetriou team-mate Paul Follett, another 968 runner. Richard Ellis is the next rear-engined car in the points in fifth, his 993 C2 the most powerful car it he race but also the heaviest.

Reigning champion Chris Dyer heads the Class two points, just 12 behind Sumpter in the title chase. Quick and consistent in his Strasse run 944 S2, Dyer usually works his way up the overall order as the races progress.

The Porsche Club Championship runners qualify at 10.00 on Saturday morning, with the first of the two 25-minute races at 13.00. The second race is scheduled to start at 16.15.
