Nasr takes British F3 win number six on Paul Ricard debut

Brazil’s Felipe Nasr took a supreme lights-to-flag victory at Paul Ricard in the south of France this afternoon, Saturday, 16th July, during round 16 of the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series – the Carlin driver’s sixth win of the 2011 season.Once again increasing his championship lead yet further, his advantage now standing at 94 points, the 18-year-old didn’t put a wheel wrong over the course of the 14 laps to seal a very important win and a strong psychological boost over pole-sitting team-mate Kevin Magnussen. In qualifying Felipe just missed out on pole position by 0.2 seconds but rather than pushing to the finish of the session he took the decision to pit with a couple of minutes remaining, happy to settle for a front-row start and at the same time conserve his tyres. That proved to be a good call as not only did Felipe manage to immediately take the lead at the start of the race, he also ran consistently rapid times throughout and ended round 16 with the fastest lap of 2m02.857 seconds to confirm his searing pace.Making a terrific getaway to easily usurp the pole-sitter, the championship leader ended lap one 0.7 seconds to the good over the pursuing Antonio Felix da Costa and despite some early pressure from the Portuguese driver Felipe remained unsurprisingly calm and in full control.Steadily building his cushion from lap four onward, Felipe never looked in danger of relinquishing his lead and after posting a time of 2m02.899 seconds on the seventh tour to set a new fastest lap he improved on that yet further and set the quickest of the race on lap 10.In the end, the Brasilia-born driver steered his Volkswagen-powered Dallara to a 1.3 second winning margin at the chequered flag to notch-up his sixth win of the season and also his 11th podium visit from 16 races contested so far in 2011 – not a bad way to begin his first race weekend at Paul Ricard.“That was a fantastic result for us”, said Felipe, “I made a brilliant start, I really got away very well, and into the first corner I was already about three car lengths ahead. From there I just had to control the pace and keep putting in good lap times.“Da Costa did put me under pressure for the first three laps but from there I was able to pull a gap and control everything. We got the quickest lap too so we get another point for that which is great for the championship. It’s been a perfect start to the weekend already, hopefully we can have another strong day tomorrow.”
