Victory number seven of Felipe Nasr's brilliant 2011 season was secured during round 18 of the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series at Paul Ricard, Sunday, 17th July - a drama-filled final lap allowing the Brazilian star to enjoy a magnificent double success on French soil.Running in third place and on course for his 12th podium of the campaignwhatever the outcome on the last lap, the dominant points leader couldn'tbelieve his good fortune when team-mate Kevin Magnussen and Antonio Felix daCosta collided at the last corner. For Felipe, the outcome was all thesweeter after earlier suffering front-wing damage through some aggressivedriving from Magnussen.Taking his second win of the weekend - having raced to a superb victoryduring round 16 on Saturday - Felipe also increased his advantage in thechampionship to over 100 points as the series prepares to visitSpa-Francorchamps in Belgium a fortnight from now.The result came as a perfect response to a 30 second post-race penalty fromthe day's opening encounter, round 17, when Felipe was deemed by officialsto have exceeded the track limits. Taking ninth place originally, with theaddition of the time penalty he was classified in 16th place."It's been a very good weekend for us, we've taken many points and two morewins which is great for the championship", said the Carlin driver, "We'regetting closer and closer to the title all of the time but there's still along way to go, we need more wins and that's what I want. The car was greatall weekend, thanks to the team for another fantastic job."Starting round 18 second on the grid, Felipe saw off an early challenge fromda Costa prior to the emergence of the Safety Car following a multi-carincident on the opening lap. Action resumed on the sixth tour and as therace unfolded the lead trio ran, quite literally, nose-to-tail. Light rainin the air threatened but it never materialised into anything of note andFelipe continued to pressure hard.Running quicker than leader Magnussen and searching for a way past, on lap10 Felipe saw his chance and moved inside but some very aggressive drivingfrom the Dane resulted in a damaged front wing for the championship leaderand a loss of second position soon after to da Costa.Despite this, Felipe maintained superb composure and tremendous speed andcontinued to pile on the pressure to his two rivals. Edging momentarilyahead of da Costa on lap 15, Felipe had to settle for third again but, undeterred, he continued to seek a way past as the laps counted down. Then came the dramatic, and highly unexpected, turn of events when da Costaand Magnussen came together at the last corner and Felipe gladly racedthrough to take yet another win in his Carlin run Dallara-Volkswagen.He commented: "I knew I was quicker than Kevin (Magnussen) early on and Iwanted to try and pass as quickly as I could but he blocked me. Just beforeTurn 11 on lap 10 I moved inside him but he turned in on me veryaggressively and it damaged my front wing. He really didn't need to do that,we were doing 230 km/h at that point and it was a big risk."During this morning's 17th round, Felipe started on the fourth row of the'reverse grid' but all manner of chaos reigned at the beginning when thestart was aborted due to a stalled car. The lights changed from red, throughyellow, and then to green leading to confusion over whether racing hadactually begun with some cars slowly moving away from the line and othersgetting up to full-speed.
Several runners then made contact, leading to immediate red flags, butthankfully Felipe's car emerged undamaged from the melee despite beingheavily tagged at the rear. Over a shortened distance of six laps, racingresumed and although contact while fighting over sixth place lost Felipeseveral positions, he fought back strongly to take ninth prior to thepost-race time penalty."The penalty in today's first race was a shame", added Felipe, "I only wentwide off-line to avoid contact but, anyway, they said I gained an advantagewith that and I had the penalty. It's not a big problem though as we havethe two wins this weekend and lots of points. Spa is next, I really likethat track so I can't wait to get there."Less than two weeks remain until rounds 19, 20 and 21 of the Cooper TiresBritish F3 International Series take place at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgiumon Friday, 29th July, and Saturday, 30th July.
