BIG EVENT LATEST...THE line-up of competing teams has been confirmed for the Premier League Fours to be staged at Leicester’s Beaumont Park venue on Sunday August 7.The basis of selection has been on July 1 averages amongst each club’s top four riders, with the top seven clubs qualifying for the event, and they are joined by Leicester as hosts. The qualifying clubs, in order of averages, are: Redcar, Sheffield, Workington, Edinburgh, Ipswich, Somerset and Glasgow.
The draw for the event will see the eight clubs split into two groups of four, with the semi-final groups run over eight heats apiece. The top two from each group will then contest the 12-heat Final. SpeedwayGB Events co-ordinator David Hoggart said: “Beaumont Park is a terrific facility, and this meeting promises to be a fantastic day of speedway.“Leicester City Council are 100 per cent behind the event, and they have been giving us every assistance with making the Fours a massive success.“We’d like to advise supporters to buy their tickets in advance if possible, as we are expecting a big crowd on the day.”Contact details for Leicester Speedway are available from the club’s official website, leicesterlions.co .
*JOSH Auty and Jerran Hart will take the Wild Card positions for the first round of the World Under-21 Final at Poole on Sunday July 24.Auty’s call-up comes as some consolation after he suffered a broken ankle during his semi-final in Slovakia earlier this season, with the Sheffield and Coventry man making an earlier than expected recovery.
He said: “I was heartbroken when I broke my ankle because it ruled me out of the British Final but also ended my hopes of qualifying for the World Under-21 Final.“At least this way we have a chance to experience a round of the final at Poole and that’s a track I’ve ridden before with Coventry in the Elite League and I’ve quite enjoyed it.”*BRITISH Youth bosses have confirmed the draw for the British Under-19 Final at Rye House on Saturday July 23.The riding order is as follows: Joe Jacobs, Oliver Rayson, Brendan Johnson, Richard Franklin, Jason Garrity, Ashley Morris, Richard Andrews, Shane Hazelden, Darryl Ritchings, James Sarjeant, Kyle Howarth, Tom Stokes, Jake Knight, Ben Morley, Tom Perry, Marc Owen. Reserves: Danny Stoneman, Brandon Freemantle.SUPER7EVEN SERIES SPEEDWAY GB EVENTSBRITISH UNDER-21 FINAL: TAI WOFFINDENELITE LEAGUE PAIRS: POOLEBRITISH FINAL: SCOTT NICHOLLSPREMIER LEAGUE PAIRS: GLASGOWPREMIER LEAGUE FOURS: Leicester, August 7PREMIER LEAGUE RIDERS CHAMPIONSHIP: Sheffield, September 25ELITE LEAGUE RIDERS CHAMPIONSHIP: Swindon, October 15ELITE LEAGUE LATEST…BELLE VUE will deploy a revised riding order this week with doubling-up rider Craig Cook moving out of the reserve berth for the Elite League meetings he is available for.Team boss Jim Lynch said: “Cook has been given a new official average after completing the required four home and four away meetings. It means I have to use him in the top five.“I switched (Patrick) Hougaard and (Rory) Schlein as an experiment and I think it improved the team in some ways. However, Schlein said he would prefer to be at No 5 and I have reverted to the original line-up now that Hougaard is fit again after his hand injury.”BIRMINGHAM boss Graham Drury has confirmed short-term signing Ulrich Ostergaard will remain with the club for the rest of the season with the man he replaced, Ales Dryml, also now fit to returnOstergaard will take the place of doubling-up riders Kevin Wolbert and James Wright, who have been released from their Brummies duties.Drury said: “It was with great reluctance that I felt I had to release Kevin and James because they both have their positives. But it means we will be a more consistent team. We go into the second phase of fixtures and we just don’t know what the Premier League fixture list will look like and how it will affect James and Kevin.”COVENTRY skipper Edward Kennett was unbeaten from two rides in the Bees’ abandoned match at Eastbourne on Monday, but admitted there was no option but to call a halt to proceedings.Kennett said: “It’s a shame because Bob Dugard and all the boys here did a fantastic job of trying to get the meeting on, but the rain has beaten us.“It was pretty dangerous out there, you certainly couldn’t do any overtaking because it was going to be one-line, so I think it was the best thing to call it a day.”EASTBOURNE boss Trevor Geer believes the Eagles’ next two away trips offer the Eagles the chance to enhance their top four position, despite a lengthy recent break from action.Geer said: “The race for the top four has really closed up. There are a few teams in the running now, but all the time Poole are beating people it helps us.“What we need to do is get some points ourselves. We go to Birmingham and Swindon, and I would like to think they are two tracks where we could look for some away points.”LAKESIDE will introduce former Swedish Under-21 star Kim Nilsson for their big home meeting against Poole on Friday – and promoter Jon Cook is now awaiting news of the knee injury which is currently keeping Adam Shields out of action.Cook said: “We are putting in place the backroom team Kim will need to succeed at this level and we felt it important to get him over in World Cup week to gain track time ahead of a tough opener against the Pirates.“We are also still actively working on another change, should it be necessary, having agreed a deadline with Adam Shields to decide if he will attempt a return this season.”KING’S LYNN manager Rob Lyon believes the Stars’ new averages will give them an even stronger line-up, especially with good news over Lasse Bjerre’s fitness with the young Dane declaring himself fit to return this week.Lyon said: “It is a real boost to be able to put out our strongest team, I was worried that Lasse would be out for the rest of the season but obviously he is a young lad and is fearless and full of enthusiasm. “With new averages coming into effect for him and Tomas (Topinka) it means they effectively swap positions and I believe this will make us even stronger and also give Tomas the confidence boost that he needs!”PETERBOROUGH reserve Richard Lawson continued his steady improvement in his Elite League racing with a score of paid-seven in the Panthers’ 53-40 win over Lakeside.Lawson said: “It was a good night for me, definitely. I’m getting used to the track a lot more now and think I’m riding much better lines.“My aim at the moment is to score in every ride, to get rid of the last places. Unfortunately I had one bad one at the end but I’m feeling more and more confident every week.”POOLE’s break from racing during the World Cup came at a good time for talented young Swede Dennis Andersson, who was suffering from several injury problems after recent accidents.Andersson said: “I’ve caught a few injuries lately which I couldn’t do anything about because people had been hitting me from all over the place. That’s speedway, sometimes you have to eat dirt.“I felt I should have taken a week and a half off because I couldn’t even move my footrest to be able to slide during our home win over Belle Vue. I was also riding with a broken finger which I still had against King’s Lynn.”SWINDON’S former boss Ronnie Russell, who will now concentrate on track duties at Blunsdon, says he backs the appointment of Jan Staechmann as his successor.Russell said: “My feeling for this club is greater than my ego as team manager. I only want the club to be successful, and if that means I had to stand down then I’m all for it.“I know Jan very well, he’s an absolute gentleman and a smashing bloke. He’s also got a route into a lot of these new, young Danish riders and long-term that could be a big plus for Swindon.”WOLVERHAMPTON manager Peter Adams says Ludvig Lindgren and Ricky Wells will both benefit from their new deals with Premier League clubs which will give them more regular racing over the coming weeks.Adams said: “Ricky went through a phase where he scored well in some meetings for us but then there was a gap in the fixture list and, of course, last week we were closed because of the Speedway World Cup.“The same applies to Ludvig, he hasn’t been at his best and if he can get his confidence back up then he could be a major player for us for the remainder of the season.”PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST…BERWICK boss Ian Rae has spoken of his delight at the Bandits’ acquisition of Ludvig Lindgren to replace injured fellow Swede Alex Edberg.Rae said: “He has spent the last two years racing against the very best riders in the world every week in the Elite League with Wolverhampton, and we consider ourselves pretty fortunate to have obtained his agreement to line up at Shielfield Park with immediate effect.”EDINBURGH boss John Campbell admitted the club had no choice but to change their riding order as they were not getting the best from the partnership of Andrew Tully and Kalle Katajisto.Campbell said: “Andrew has got it into his head that Kalle was putting him off. There is no point in pursuing that partnership. I don't think it matters where Kalle rides, we just hope he scores better than he has been doing.”GLASGOW will put their Premier League aspirations to one side this weekend as they face Berwick in a KO Cup clash which promoter Stewart Dickson expects to be close-fought.Dickson said: “We now sit one point behind Sheffield, but for the next week we can forget about the league and worry about the Cup, and I think we are in for a couple of cracking meetings with Berwick for a place in the semi finals. Being honest I think it is on a knife edge over the two legs.”IPSWICH boss Pete Simmons has stressed the importance of building up a first leg lead when the Witches go into Knockout Cup action against Newport this week.Simmons said: “They look quite a handful for our top boys to cope with. So perhaps it’s lower down the order that we need to make our points count, and that means both our reserves must step up to the mark to see us in with a fighting chance of the overall victory.”LEICESTER expect to have John Oliver back in action for Sunday’s home clash with Workington after a month on the sidelines with a broken scaphoid.Lions manager Jason Attwood said: “The healing process has been fine, he’s had his main cast off for a couple of weeks, and he showed no ill effects when I watched him having a practice on Saturday. His left wrist is still supported but that has no effect on what he can do on the bike.”NEWCASTLE collected a useful away point from their 42-48 defeat at Newport on Saturday, although stand-in boss Andrew Dalby was hoping for more after the Diamonds took a four point lead into the last three heats.Dalby said: “After recovering so well from a shocking start to the match, we were gutted to miss out on victory in the closing stages. Our late replacement guest rider Cory Gathercole of Somerset got stuck in and was very much one of the team in the pits, and I was very proud of them all.”NEWPORT boss Kevin Brown says his side have responded well to the pressure placed on them, with improved results following the shock home defeat by Scunthorpe earlier in the month.Brown said: “All our riders were, and always are, aware that there are others around capable and ready to take their places, so they really did have to think about improving their form. You have good times and you experience bad times, and it is how you deal with the bad which probably counts more.”PLYMOUTH skipper Mark Simmonds faces a month on the sidelines after suffering a broken wrist in the Devils’ 28-64 defeat at Edinburgh on Friday.Promoter Mike Bowden said: “It was a nasty crash, and ironically he’s busted the wrist that he’d hurt earlier this season. That’s motor sport, it’s dangerous as all speedway riders know, and Mark knows that better than most.”REDCAR promoter Brian Havelock is wary of a heavily modified Plymouth team which will face the Bears in home and away clashes this week.He said: “'This is obviously a very different team than the one that Plymouth started the season with when they made the move up from the sport's third tier. The new signings all have a reasonable track record and suddenly the Devils look very solid. Meanwhile, Ben Barker is an out and out number one and his races with our top four should be worth the price of admission alone.”RYE HOUSE skipper Chris Neath has confirmed he has made a sufficient recovery from the respiratory problem that prevented him from racing for the Rockets at Berwick recently.Neath said: “I’ve had a bad cough for a while and put off going to the doctors thinking I would be okay, and that caught up with me. At the Edinburgh match a few weeks ago I felt fatigued and light-headed after the meeting. I’ve got antibiotics now and I feel a lot better. Unfortunately I’ve got a bit of a back problem as well, and the coughing certainly didn’t help that.”SCUNTHORPE’S new signing Richard Hall is pleased to be fixed up back at the Eddie Wright Raceway following his recent release by Premier League rivals Leicester.Hall said: “I was very happy to come back. I didn’t really want to leave when I left the first time, so this is a good thing for me. Scunthorpe is a good track for me, and I enjoy riding there. I feel I’m riding a lot better now than then, more entertaining.”SHEFFIELD reserve Simon Lambert knows he has a vital role to play in this week’s mouth-watering Knockout Cup clashes between the Tigers and fellow Premier League high-flyers Workington.Lambert said: “It’s going to be a tough one without a doubt. They have a good team but we beat them at our place in the league and beat them well. We will need a similar score to take up there on Saturday for the second leg. But if we can edge them out and get into the semi-final then I feel confident we can go all the way and maybe even win the Cup.”SOMERSET’S recent signing Joe Haines is desperate to get a clear, injury-free run, having impressed for the Rebels with a score of eight (paid ten) in the big win over Glasgow on Friday.Haines said: “I think the last full season I did was back in 2008 and I’ve spent too much time on the sidelines watching. If I hadn’t had all the injuries, things might have been different, but you just have to get on with things and handle what you’ve been dealt.”WORKINGTON suffered further frustration with two more meetings being rained-off over the weekend – meaning the Comets have raced just three times since June 11!Manager Tony Jackson said: “I was taking to Tomas Topinka and he said we would all have to re-introduce ourselves because we haven’t raced together for so long. I can’t remember ever there being so many rain-offs during the height of summer.”FIXTURE PICTURE…WEDNESDAY JULY 20:SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Belle Vue v Wolverhampton 8pm, King’s Lynn v Peterborough 7.30THURSDAY JULY 21:SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Birmingham v Lakeside 7.30, Swindon v Eastbourne 7.30PREMIER LEAGUE: Redcar v Plymouth 7.30PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP: Ipswich v Newport 7.30, Sheffield v Workington 7.45FRIDAY JULY 22:SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Coventry v Swindon 8pm, Lakeside v Poole 8pm, Peterborough v Belle Vue 7.30PREMIER LEAGUE: Edinburgh v Rye House 7.30, Plymouth v Redcar 7.30PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP Q/F: Somerset v Newcastle 7.30NATIONAL LEAGUE: Scunthorpe v Newport 7.30SATURDAY JULY 23:BRITISH UNDER-19 CHAMPIONSHIP: Rye House 7pmPREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP Q/F: Berwick v Glasgow 7pm, Newport v Ipswich 7pm, Workington v Sheffield 7pmSUNDAY JULY 24:WORLD UNDER-21 FINAL ROUND 1: Poole 4pmPREMIER LEAGUE: Leicester v Workington 7pmPREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP Q/F: Glasgow v Berwick 4pm, Newcastle v Somerset 6.30NATIONAL LEAGUE: Mildenhall v Hackney 4.30, Stoke v Belle Vue 7pmMONDAY JULY 25:SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Belle Vue v Peterborough 7.30, Coventry v Poole 7.30ELITE LEAGUE KO CUP 2nd leg: Wolverhampton v Eastbourne 7.30TUESDAY JULY 26:NATIONAL LEAGUE: Isle of Wight v Stoke 7.30F.A.S.T.
